noob affilaite question

I'm new to affiliates so be gentle....
Can I just have a link or graphic which links to a sites homepage and I will earn if someone goes on to buy from any page? for example if I have a link to m&s homepage do I get commission any anything or do I have to link to a particular item?

if the link / image has your affiliate code you will get the commission.

sometimes, even if they visit the store at a later date and place an order, you may still get the commission (cookies)
