Moves behind the scenes have quelled the uprising. Don’t challenge an “influential” opponent unless you have little to lose, a lot to gain and a strong case. Clearly none of us are in that position either individually or jointly - so nothing will change.

It is not right that Admin should have to deal with complaints arising from comments posted on the forum about individuals or organisations. Occasionally this may be unavoidable but we should all remember that the forum is a privately run service provided free of charge, and use it with due care and consideration.

On a more positive note I would like to thank Admin for all their time and effort in providing this forum, which is a useful source of help and information for many people.

I wish everyone a healthy and successful year in 2006.

Whist I understand the need for Admin to hold the middle ground and looking on it purely as an casual observer I see why Acorn has to take this stance (Threats of legal action etc)

But I cannot stand extreme moderation, so with this in mind unfortunately this will be my final post on Acorn.

I too wish you all the best for 2006 and beyond!

I have to say, I do agree with the posts above in that lately the moderation has been way too excessive what with threads being locked and posts being deleted. I liked the forum better in the old days when one could pretty much say what they like, unfortunately the forum police have made acorndomains more like detagged now which is a real shame because members WILL leave if it continues. For me, I'm staying put for now in the hope that the forum moderation will get better.

On another note, I'm on my computer now (it's 6am here in Sydney) because I was woken up by three huge explosions and looking out from my balcony I can see a huge pall of smoke and flames coming from the big oil refinery at Botany Bay about 10 miles away. The air smells of oil and there's fire engine sirens going off all over the place, it exactly the same as you guys had in the UK a few weeks back, I do hope it's not terrorists.

We had previously posted forum guidance terms to try to avoid such contentious posts.

We let the thread in question run for 9 pages before we locked it and it has not been deleted.

We do try to let everyone have their say but we cannot allow potentially libelous posts against Individuals and UK Companies, named or implied, as we do not have any funding to appoint lawyers.

We hope you can understand our position so that we can all move onto a more positive note for the new year.

Running away to pastures new is not a good solution.

We as individuals just have to be more careful. If the shoe was on the other foot and it was the people who were posting irresponsibly here that had potential legal repurcussions hanging over them, then I am sure they would think twice.

If you want to slag of individuals/companies just do it in PM and off the public boards. Someone has been good enough to set this thing up so the least we can do is to show some loyalty/protection whatever you want to call it to the guys that run it!

It does seem that topics have been locked, not because they were libellous, but purely because of commercial pressure.

I'm not one who believes that anybody has been 'cheating', but I do understand statistics and think that some TAG holders must have information that is not public.
Surely this is fair comment.

I have been phoned by members of the 'Inner Circle of Drop Catchers', who don't like me giving too many hints on this board and to point out that they laugh at my amateur efforts. I didn't like that.

The odd serious debate does make a change from people trying to sell 5th rate domains for £10K+ and the occasional scam.

That's really bad and unprofessional, and as I've bought quite a few domains of you in the past in my view you are probably one of the most respected and professional domain resellers out there.

My thinking may be wrong, but surely if legal action was taken it would be taken against the person making the acusations and not the forum.

In which was does the moderation have to be so high, could legal action be taken against Admin?

either way i find the forum helpful and a good read.

Like a newspaper or TV station, we are responsible for making sure the material we distribute over the Internet is not libelous or defamatory.

Papers get sued for printing libelous information which is usually from an outside source.

How is it slaunder if nobody is named?

When you invest time and money into a business, there is always times when you doubt the fairness of the system, when you need to talk to people who have more experience and who overcame the same doubts. Is that Libellous?

FCDomains is spot on when he says this is about commercial pressure more than legal threats. "AcornDomains the top UK domain forum" is the new banner, I hope Admin realizes that this forum is at the top and "a good read" because members are generous with their knowledge even when it goes against their own interests.

I've recommended Acorn at conferences in the US and in London. I will do no more.

But then i supose if you choose to let the information stay on the site you are acting in a similar way.

To keep bots away. So when you wonder about 'XyXyZ' you won't find 'em discussed.

It's a shame Admin has to fullfil such ridiculous claims.

As with many other forums you should state in the TOS that all posts belong to the people making the post.

something like:
1. Messages posted at this site are the sole opinion and responsibility of the poster.
2. You are responsible for your own posts and agree not to hold acorndomains.co.uk liable for any messages posted.
3. You agree not to hold acorndomains.co.uk or its members liable for anything stated within the forums.

Likewise, I have been 'advised' that a 'top catcher is one who keeps his mouth shut'... as a few of you know me they know I ignored such 'advice'

I think this forum does a great job, admin does well in a tricky situation.

End of the day if stuff is posted on here Admin can be held partly responsible legally as publisher, so its not just your arse on the line is it?

If people have allegations then posting here is not the answer as admin does not run Nominet.

Everything else apart from cheating is discussed brilliantly here without problem, this is not the arena for such discussion and we should not expect Admin to take flack for something that is nothing to do with him.

This forum is the best out there, and one of the best domain forums around, so I hope that people keep contributing but also show respect to Admin by not getting him into potential hot water for nothing todo with him.
