So, did anyone else bid on this?

My offer was turned down as "it was an asset sale that included the domain name".

Just checked and it looks like the whole company was bought out.

I emailed them after the site closed. I don't they put it up for sale as such

I did think of enquiring but thought they'd keep hold of the brand. As an online only offering there is loads of opportunities with that.

My old business partner sold this name to them for £3500. They bought it under the guise of a woman buying it as a gift for her boyfriend.

Its hard to blame them for that though. Look how many posts/threads there are around here with domainers saying they will ramp the price up if they feel the prospective buyer will swallow it. You'd need to be a fool to approach a random domain owner from a position of obviously having money.

It would take some amount of effort to clean up the link profile before you could use it for anything of value. 1800 linking domains in Majestic... you're going to need to do something about that or risk being seen as just trying to piggyback on un-earnt page rank and get whacked for it.

He's not a domainer, he's a developer who owned two names. He asked for £5k and she said she couldn't afford any more than £3.5k. It seemed pretty devious to me considering he wasn't being greedy.
Should tell him to look at including provisions e.g. anti-embarrassment/ Deferred consideration / Conditional Consideration / Earn-out clause etc in future sales there are ways to have a slice even after sale especially if they give it I want it for college project, friend etc
