I live in Spain, so can offer that perspective.
It is well known that the US/UK uptake of web has been ahead of the rest of the world. Spain is catching up, but is still well behind.
SME business usage of the web is very poor. Simple stuff like PayPal integration, functional shopping carts, even being able to respond to
[email protected] ! There are a few notable exceptions, often international companies where you are dealing with their spanish subsidiary. But the native Spanish mom-and-pop business just hasn't got it yet.
Various arms of the Govt are plugged in, to access the likes of your council tax, booking an MOT online, ...
As for affiliate marketing and web monetisation / domain valuation from our perspective, Spain is way, way behind the UK. (Google.es, amazon.es are notable exceptions, and serve adSense in Spanish and amazon.es ads respectively.)
I suspect Germany is somewhere in maturity between the UK and Spain.
What that all means for the original question of the value of a generic german-word.com, I don't know. I do know that a lot of good generic spanish names are taken, as english-word.es and en-espanol.es My general impression is that many of these have been grabbed in bulk and are being squatted.
Moreover, my feeling is that the intent of the squatters is geo-specific. We note the large hispanic population of the US, and that targetting that demographic is more likely through en-espanol.com than en-espanol.es
Yep, I could learn more spanish, and go looking for spanish domain forums. Or maybe there are other members on here - UK-domiciled or otherwise - who are interested in discussing EU-non-UK markets ?
Anyone ?
