The menu system takes a bit of getting your head around but once you have it, it will do all you need.
Another tip, anyone with joomla needs this imo http://www.nonumber.nl/extensions/advancedmodulemanager
It makes things oh so much easier.

I have tried several times to get to grips w. Joomla and each time given up due to it's (in my mind) complicated back end system which doesn't name the obvious. That plugin may indeed be a godsend.
