Why not just set replies to a minimum of 8 characters long.

That way, just putting 'pm sent' returns an error.

However, an inline pm button would also be good

I'm one of those traditionalists that loves to send and receive actual mail, so if a "letter posted" approach is ever widely adopted and embraced here, i'm all in.

You only have to click the name and select PM from the menu, surely that's not complicated and worthy of a standalone button to clutter up the site ?

Thats not what I meant, What I meant was an additional "like" button which basically said "PM sent". It would show up as a notification and show at the bottom of the OP.

It would take away the need to write PM sent in the thread and having threads full of fluff. Limiting the minimum character length is also another idea, trouble is people then just get creative and start writing slightly longer pointless posts to get around it.

Do we actually need to know that person A has sent a PM to person B though? Surely this is just wasting everyone's time, person B will get the PM privately and after all it is a private message. I'd moderate all these posts and slap everyone who sends one

No we don't, Its an idea.

If it was me though id simply not allow replies at all in sales threads to save the ball ache of people moaning about PM sent messages or moderating them.

There is no need to discuss a sale thread in the public so allow thread creation and editing of OP but don't allow replies. Will save bumping of threads reducing it by £10 every time aswell when they don't sell

I think the reason people post "PM sent" is to try and encourage/push/shame the original poster of the Wanted ad into replying to that PM.

That's not to say it's a good idea, but it at least explains why people do it (either that, or I'm missing a trick somewhere)
