Podcasts?

I'm looking to create some free podcasts on one of my sites.

Has anyone got any experience with this kind of thing and do you use any particular kit? Or is it as easy as having a mic and a computer + software?!

It really is that easy (I think). If you have a Mac you can do the whole thing within Garage Band which is software which comes with the computer.

You may want to buy a better mic than the internal one (there are usb mics and even mics which are completely portable with internal memory card).

I can't remember all the technical details but there you will need to host the audio file somewhere and have some kind of rss/xml feed that will keep track of new 'episodes'.

You can consider getting them in iTunes and other directories. Also look into having some visuals with your podcast (even though it's an audio file, some people/devices can view images on their devices as the audio is playing).

Hope that helps a bit, I can learn a lot from this thread so hope others reply with info.

Thanks both, very interesting indeed.

Looking at some USB podcasting kits around now to make a choice - they range anywhere from £40-£200 or so I've seen and I like the look of the Behringer Podcastudio USB (about £80 this one).

I'd want to make available via the site and also submit to iTunes for free use (anyone done this, is it tricky?!). PR possibilities are endless though it seems with these.

I've never actually created a podcast myself, but I did come across a nice tutorial on About.com for anyone looking to create one. The link leads to a list of podcast-creating services, but the tutorial starts on the previous page.

Well, it's been a learning curve!

First podcast created with hardware received as posted earlier (really good set up BTW for the £), edited using Audacity, converted to MP3, online using a nifty player and just submitted to iTunes (who have strict XML requirements!).

I'm no longer a virgin podcaster, lol!

Depends on who makes them (voiceover actors with a bit of "fame" will charge a good deal more - also independent artists tend to be a bit less expensive than corporates), length of podcast, number of artists, broadcasting rights, dev time, music rights, editing complexity ect.
