Do you think there's still room for an SEO information site in 2010? It's something I've always wanted to work on (I have various abortive and half-finished efforts going back to 1998) but somehow I never quite get around to completing the project. Anyway, it's perhaps time for the next iteration...

If so, what kind of things would you like the site to talk about?

Seriously though, something along the lines of all the get rich quick SEO stuff we see advertised every day for a limited time offer of $97, but that works, is ethical and will not need to be replaced with "the next big thing" each time the search engines kill the spamming technique sold.

Practical advise on generating traffic would be good.

Also, I've never understood why links are so important and a lot of SEO's seem to bang on about getting links, surely the fact that you can buy into / build your own link networks defeats the purpose of valued links? I don't go round creating natural links from my sites to things I find useful, so others actually do this or only those wanting SEO value from their links?

How many times have you searched for something only to be presented with a few pages of results that are made for adsense sites and no real value? How can you get your site to rank above these?

One thing I was thinking about was to provide an "SEO template" (for want of a better description) which would basically be the barest of bare-bones for a web page, but with every legitimate SEO tweak already built in and documented. So you'd still have to work on the actual page layout, structure, CSS etc. but at least you'd have guidance when it came to the elements that matter for SEO.

Also, if I do go ahead with the project, I intend to focus on both FREE and PAID resources and tactics. There's far too much emphasis on FREE out there, whereas it's often easier to pay a bit and save hours or days of work.

there are so many seo sites out there at the moment and some of them are really good what would you offer that was unique ???

if u can think of a USP that would allow you to get and maintain a competitive advantage in some way then you should go for it if your just another me too site i wouldn't bother loads of better and easier niches to go after.

SEO advise for CMS's like Drupal (my preference) & Joomla would be good, there's a lot of WP specific info about, but not so much in other areas.

By free I was referring to the advise not the implementation of it. If you can rattle out some good usable techniques, then I'm sure you can market affordable services that implement this advise to go alongside

I did look at the local SEO a while back, but have probably forgotten most of it I'm about to re-launch a local town site, so will have to go back and have a re-read.

Yes I certainly think there is, but I can't help you on what because I don't know much about SEO, so bit of a catch 22.

I agree about the Joomla and other CMS based seo help, that would definetly be a good thing in my opinion.

Small business SEO - getting a site from PR 0 to PR 1
SEO for Wordpress sites and blogs
SEO for affiliate sites
SEO for parked domains (tough nut to crack but worth a fortune).
SEO audit of sites for sale

If you wanted to charge for your product, you are going to have to really go for it and establish authority, otherwise you won't make a dent on the big sites that are already doing this.

If you want to make money, I think an easier way would be to blog about how to make money from internet sites in general. People are looking for gurus.

it's gotta be a labour of love as things change daily
plus if you want a popular site the info has to be free and able to be spidered
so you can have an option where people subscribe for latest updates, rss etc

tricky one to get people to pay for anything now and to really change someones fortune via seo you have to do it yourself, or team. so have to have access to their hosting etc
messy and lots of grief potentially

think better off doing a free resource thats a labour of love and when successful getting paid advertising but not from google adsense or crap like that. proper companies paying annual fees

Thanks for all comments, positive and less so. One thing I am considering is having sections with tips and best practices about paid tools such as Wordtracker - that's one revenue option. I don't intend to go down the guru route I think.

For domains, I may junk and rebuild PR2.com as it has 12 years of history, or start from scratch with a better keyword name of some kind..

For me trying to find the bits that are relevant to the UK on these mega seo sites and the trying to learn how to seo a .com is a bit more of a vague approach because for me the UK market maybe very different.

So maybe your USP could be UK only.

I think that's a great idea. So many sites focus on US etc, it's often difficult to filter out info that is relevant to the UK.

But what works for seo in USA, works in UK - there really isn't that much of a difference at all.

I think setting up an seo informational site would be a complete waste of time at this point. I see no realistic way you could compete with seobook/seomoz and so on.

The only real exception I can see would be if you are doing it just because its a hobby or interesting topic for you. I think the ROI would be extremely poor purely from a business perspective.

Just thinking of what would be handy and new, someone or some company that can really monetise a site.

That's really the one cog left in the wheel that we are missing. Any company that can offer an affordable solution to that missing link would be a success imo.

Things like knowing which are the best affiliate links for certain products, how to quickly implement them.

I'd pay for that service, maybe someone out there with time to burn and fire up that end of the market.

If you believe the guy in the video below, local seo looks like it will be the way to go, as (if he is right) there is going to be another gazillion sites popping up in the near future.

And that's when I will stop using google as it will be full of sh*te but will be a mega cash cow for the google giant.
