Anyone know what i can buy as a replacement for a dell xps 1530 harddrive? I have no idea whats in it now expect its a 500GB

The dell offering is about £300 which has to be way over the top as the same drive is prob on amazon as OEM for £50 but which one?

Oddly you cant find out the oringial spec of the machine unless you log into to dell using that machine - something you cant do if your harddrive is screwed!

I'm guessing its sata but again i cant be 100% unless someone knows where to look?

if anyone has any advice it would be much appreciated
thanks in advance

If its an M1530 they are 5.4k 2.5" sata drives.
Had one in a few weeks back for a format and reinstall.

that sounds spot on - can i buy anything with this spec??
thanks

You can pretty much, or you can even upgrade to 7.2k to get even more performance (at the expense of heat and battery life).
Just stick to the decent makes like Seagate or Western Digital.

Check in the my computer device manager in windows. Copy and paste the model number of the harddrive into google.

I have a new Dell XPS with a Seagate 1TB Hard Drive which is only about £70 on ebuyer, so your probably looking at only about £40 for a replacement!

Just worked out yours is a laptop though, mines a desktop computer so prices may be a bit different!

i cant the harddrive is fried! :)

have seen that some files are still access able via ubunto - so going to replace drive and pull what data i can onto a external

Oops you posted as I was writing.

Of yours the first looks fine. The second is 7.2k so will be warmer if you want to avoid the heat.

Yep spec is fine.
Only downside is its not sold by Amazon or a retailer I have heard of before. Should be fine but thats for you to be aware of when you decide.

Jimm - many thanks for all your advice. will let you know how i get on - though fingers crossed it i'll be a painless plug and play event

have gone for the first one - the segate what ever it was - has anyone ever thought that buying on amazon is tooooooooo easy?

much appreciated!

Similiar situation. I have a Fujitsu MHW212OBH drive in my dell X1710 laptop. I'd like a bigger capacity one, but there only seems to me one option on the dell site, which isn't much of an improvement spacewise, and seems much more expesnive than it should be. I'd be happy to buy a generic model, but am worried that it won't work in my system.

No problem. Good luck and give me a shout if you get stuck.

Cant find much on that product code. But if its a 2.5" sata pretty much any will be fine.
There are some odd ones which are slightly taller than 9.5mm but they are few and far between.

Thanks. On the dell site, it informs me that these two drives are compatible:

DELL Dell - 80 GB - (5,400Rpm) - SATA - Hard Drive - Kit : Storage, Drives & Media | Dell United Kingdom

DELL Dell - 80 GB - (7,200Rpm) - SATA - Hard Drive - Kit : Storage, Drives & Media | Dell United Kingdom

Neither of them appeal though. My system is quite powerful so I'm not looking for a 80gb drive.

Yeah any of the ones we have mentioned here will be fine or any normal 2.5" sata drive.
Just remember 7.2k are faster but cost battery and heat. Larger cache does also bring performance but in normal use the advantage is negligible.

Got to love the quote from dell:
Dell said:
In addition, this drive offers 5400 RPM rotational speed for faster data access
5.4k != faster data it doesnt get much worse...
