Screen resolution & widescreen format...

Hi All

I'm wondering what screen resolutions, and particularly whether widescreen/standard formats you are al using on your pc & laptops.

For years it's all been whether 800x600 or 1024x768. That was fine for 15.4" laptops etc but it has changed a lot in the last couple of years with a move to 17"+ standard laptop screens & 19-21" monitors.

After doing mainly backend systems for a while I'm now doing both. While 1024 seems standard for development it often leads to whacky results when floating divs unless the body container is fixed.

I'm on 800 x 600 on this desktop, not sure what the laptop is, hardly ever use it.

pretty rare for 800x600 thesedays... though I'm not sure what resolution netbooks & 11-14" screens use.

2 x 1280 by 1024 (primary & secondary) on my Office PC which is the day-to-day dev machine

1 x 1920 by 1080 PC to LCD HD TV

pretty big ;-) Kind of in a corner of the room; it goes: 1 x 24" widescreen, 1 x17", 1x 24" widesecreen, 1 x21", 1x14" laptop (it's a tablet swivelled into A4 orientation)

Never liked widescreen on desktop, will get the calculator out.

1600 by 1200 times 6 is 4800 x 2400

I'm on 800 x 600 on this desktop, not sure what the laptop is, hardly ever use it.

If your building a front end the de facto for fixed width at the moment appears to be ~960px, mainly because it divides nicely for 12/16/24 column layouts and fits on a screen 1024px wide.

Regarding issues with positioning for fixed width layouts it might be worth using a css framework to take some of the pain away:

I've used all three in client applications (particularly liking 960 ATM) and recommend giving them a shot if your going to be involved in more front-end work.

yui and 960 also support fluid grids (not sure on blueprint) which have minimum widths but stretch for wider resolutions if you want/need to cater for larger resolutions.

The 960 figure is one I sort of found for myself - it fits the standard 15.4" 1024 width - along with variants depending on padding & margin as well as the 1/3 2/3 rules that photographers use for creating visual balance. I'll have a look at the links though.

960 or 990 are the widths I work to at the mo.

Prior to that I ran 1600 x 1200 on a single 22" CRT, which weighed a tonne and have now given to a relative, which I bought in early 2001.

So whilst high resolutions are common these days, I wonder how many of you have been running 1600 x 1200 or higher for as long as I have.

Mine was a Mitsubishi Diamond and was just enormous but a great display until it went bang.

Now my setup is similar to stevebrowne (and yes I've got a big desk!)

2 x 1280x1024
1 x 1280x800 (laptop)

I have just one monitor 1920 x 1200.

I tend to set site widths at around 990-1000px

If you are redesigning a site then a look what the stats to see what current users are using will give you some insight.

I have a big payment due at some point, and will be getting a decent multi-screened beast. Probably not that big though!

Although it does look a bit staged to me, nobody could really work with monitors in those positions could they?!??!
