Having done deals on a number of domains, I've found a few self-managed tag holders have struggled with the transfer of a sold/purchased domain name, so thought I'd give a quick guide should it help anyone out in the future. Note this only applies to self-managed tag holders using the registrar 'release' option (not the £12 email transfer).

#1 Seller

Go to WEB DOMAIN MANAGER > MANAGE DOMAINS and TICK the BOX of the domain(s) on the left hand side and then RELEASE which is above the domain list, towards the middle/left.

Enter the TAG HOLDER name and complete the process. The BUYER now has 'registrar' control of the domain, but at this stage, not 'registrant' control.

If you experience any issues, you may need to add the new registrant as a THIRD PARTY NAME in the TAG SETTINGS section

#2 Buyer

Go to WEB DOMAIN MANAGER > MANAGE DOMAINS and the domain(s) will show, but in the sellers registrant details.

TICK the BOX of the domain(s) on the left hand side and then TRANSFER which is above the domain list, towards the right.

From there, select ENTER REGISTRANT, click CHOOSE EXISTING, click SEARCH to bring back your full contact list, select the one you want and complete the process.

If you experience any issues, you may need to add the current registrant as a THIRD PARTY NAME in the TAG SETTINGS section.

Worth noting nominet claim this type misuse of the tag change to circumvent a transfer can be result in sanctions (they never clarified what sanctions). AFAIK no one ever has, and in my opinion no one likely will, but best to be aware of the possibility.

Where do they claim this?

Never knew that...duly ignored and will carry out :D

Good thread info Ian. I would add that i have always had to do a step first (the note regarding third party name). From the nominent registrar front screen hit:

Tag Settings > Connected Third Party Names > then add the persons name.

Undo this step after you have completed the transfer.

You and everyone else, given registrars stealing names, bending cardinal rules etc get no sanctions, whats the worst ?

I just figure, informed decision and rock on :)
