I just thought I'd throw this out there and see how it's received.

Probably quite a few of us in this forum would first and foremost like to get hold of our own first name/ last name initials (or company name initials) in the upcoming landrush, and also have a pop at getting some additional short domains as well, though the additional names would be considerably less important.

So I'm guessing people might be thinking along the lines of applying for their own initials and a bunch of other names which they mostly don't expect to get but at least if your name is down for quite a few, you might pick up one or two at a good price.

It occured to me that for many of us, the additional domains we go for probably don't matter as grabbing any 2-letter would be good, yet we might end up bidding against a fellow Acorner's initials or we might find a few Acorners end up bidding for our own initials when they would be just as happy with some other combination.

One solution would be to organise a pact whereby Acorn members agree not to bid on any one else's initials within the pact. This would minimise the competition for each of the members in the pact for their own initials, and (unless about 500 people with different initials want to join the pact!) there would still be plenty of other additional 2-letter names to go for outside the pact's protected list.

What do people think? Is there any interest? BTW best not to actually specify actual names in this thread - we'd have to organise an email list or something so that the names on the protected list are not known to anyone outside the pact as that would draw attention to them. But if quite a few people are interested, I'll get something set up for us.

I would guess a lot of people will go for every 2-letter .co.uk as it only costs about £6,000 to do so. I don't see your suggestion as having the remotest chance of working...

I'd be interested, but if I'm honest, mainly because I don't really have the capital to compete for names other than the one's I'm really interested in, so it would be for selfish reasons.

Using the Whois I'm already avoiding some where I recognise others queued up, or where it's an obvious company/name initials. Pointless getting into a bidding war against someone who will want it more than me.

Edwin is correct, for the sake of 6k, worth a punt.

I am assuming the great majority of them will be up for auction in July. So it will come down to heavy pockets.

I think it's a nice idea, but from a commercial perspective, in reality unfortunately I can't see it working.

However, if everyone is up for it, if you could all just leave g.co.uk alone that would be great :D

And also how the auctions are managed, imagine taking part in hundreds of auctions that may close on the one day.

The thing is £6k is just the entrance fee. I would think all names are bound to go for £XXXX, perhaps £XXXXX or more for some.

So if you're planning on buying a place in every auction and not bidding on most of them, then this idea may be of some benefit. If you're planning on buying a place in every auction and bidding realistic amounts for a lot of names then the outlay will be much bigger than £6k. That's fair enough for those who wish to make a high £XXXXX - £XXXXXX investment and are prepared to keep the names in stock for a while. Then as foz says there's the logistics of participating in large numbers of auctions simultaneously with the same deadline. But I presumed most people would be hoping to acquire their own initials and take a punt with a number of additional names without being too bothered which.

Anyway it was just an idea to allocate resources in a more desirable way for Acorners, but it would need quite a few people on board to make any difference.

Wouldn't say "only" £6,000 is exactly a small amount of money to purchase tickets for an auction, which is ultimately what it is. It will be interesting to see how many people, if any, will be doing so though.

However, looking at the other thread, it would appear there is only going to be a 30 minute window to bid on each domain once the auctions start. Anyone looking to bid on all domains will certainly need a logical plan to handle hundreds of auctions at the same time if there is no proxy bidding.

Edit: Noticed this has already been mentioned above.

True, guess it depends how far apart they are staggered. I imagine there are still going to be a lot of links/logins to keep track of (assuming that each domain has it's own and that applications aren't all grouped together).

I think all of the applications for a single registrant are grouped into one auction console, but I could be wrong...

That's the purpose of the auction reference number on the application payment stage I believe, i.e. you'll sign up for an account and put in all of the auction reference numbers you'll be bidding on.
