An easy way of checking just how badly IE6, 7, 8 is going to render your site, from Microsoft of all people, and for the moment it is free. I love it.

One quick install and it will preview your site in all browsers with a good inspection tool.

The other useful sites are:
IE NetRenderer - Browser Compatibility Check - (for IE browsers)
Check Browser Compatibility, Cross Platform Browser Test - Browsershots (for most browsers)

Some of these may have limits on use.

Another non Microsoft bit of kit is IE Tester

Runs like a browser and you can have tabs 1 for IE6, IE7, IE8 and so on.

The last time I was so pleased with a web design tool was when I found firebug.

You can overlay the view of the site from the different versions of IE on top of each other to show the differences very clearly, and on mouse hover will show the dom model and css.

The release version will apparently show Firefox and Safari as well, but of course I assume will not be free then.
