I should do, had enough bangers over the years, you get good at patching them up. anyway.....

my much loved 2.5 litre petrol volvo estate from '93 is causing me some probs

just broke down

see the pipe on far right near bottom, held at both ends by jubilee clips , is ribbed
is that an air intake?
what's it's proper name? that part
its been split in a few places for ages but just taped up and was fine but tape is off and has been stuttering and having to bump start

I need to buy one from local spares shop tomorrow anyway so want to look knowledgable as last time I was in there 18 months ago I didn't know my regplate or model name to tell him lol

thought was battery as started fine the next day, but a short journey put it back to square one, battery is only 18 months old and had a few recent good runouts

right, so its not ignition coil, not starter motor could it be the split pipe is not helping and possibly alternator?

or is it like everything these days? batteries only last 18 months when used to last double

any help is greatly appreciated.

had a mare tonight, luckily pushed into a space at supermarket and where I live it wont be clamped or ticketed like in London

I don't know much about cars so probably no help, but it looks like an air pipe to me, to big to be any fluids, and looks plastic so doubt any fuel or anything is going through it.

Probably cold air intake valve/tubey thing?

And your answer is an air intake they normally have a module on them that monitors the air intake and sets the fuel pressure so if thats nackered its prob getting to much fuel or not enough

that was my thinking too

thought would be 20 quid or something but looking at kits with filter about 113 + vat

maybe no filter and do myself cheap

and maybe new battery might solve it as not holding a charge

might get mate to tow to spares place, he can test battery and chuck him a tenner for putting on, cheaper than garage

Do you have a local breakers yard, if so you can save yourself a fortune with a 2nd hand part.

That looks like the air intake pipe leading via the exhaust manifold. It feeds air through the air filter to the cylinders, but more importantly through the air mass meter. The meter is critical to the engine management system, reporting the air density so the correct fuel mix is controlled at all times. If you have a split pipe, this will screw up accurate air intake, which is why your 'tape' fix was ok as a short term fix. However, If you've been getting by like this for an extended period of time, the particulate shite you've been sucking in could have damaged the meter too.

I'd start off by buying just a pipe and new air filter to see how you go. Failing that, you could be looking at forking out for a meter, but no idea how much they are for a 20 year old Volvo.

it all makes sense now

fuel consumption been worse
slight leak too, and bit of oil leak, but put some of this down to 20 year old car with 280k on clock

i won't turn over, top up bit fuel as gauge just gone maybe associated with can't read amount
tow to spares place and get parts, otherwise garage

oh, only about a year lol
and when the roll of gaffer tape ran out, masking tape didnt work so well lol

heck, there's land rovers running around 50 years old that get little more than fuel dumped in them
volvos are great cars they go forever

I'll get another decade out of her for sure lol

just thinking that

it's certainly not helping the pipe being split in many places, but tbh, gaffer tape has done fine for a year, it would have blown up or broke down before if serious

also looking around, you can normally find anything on the internet down to declassified military docs lol, and can i find a really good pic and exact name of the part?

nope

all spares places wont have in stock either, might be able to order, but is a 20 year old car we're talking about
will prob have to get a roll of tape and patch up and get to a spares place

my car does that, makes a loud reassuring hum before starting, but hasn't so much lately

could be fuel pump and the pipe splits not helping along with fact low fuel in car as couldn't judge as dig display just gone for miles


and yes, there is a couple lights up, always one or two there shouldnt be, again part and parcel of older cars


abs and service light now and then but ignore them, down to all the potholes you have to avoid these days with the council not fixing them

this weird one that came up looks like the greek symbol lambda recently
it's one i notice when things aren't running perfect

had a look on the net and that means the air/fuel ratio is going shity

so its either fuel pump or air filter pipe or combo of both
I'm learning plenty tonight

best thing about old cars, you can generally have a look around and figure it out


when it's a super duper plugin laptop car that needs diagnostic testing you're screwed if computer says no
the amount of top cars I see broke down on motorway side and rarely old ones

this time I got unlucky, thank god in local supermarket and not m1

The reassuring hum could be the fuel pump doing its job, are you quite sure there is fuel in it?

nothing wrong with an old volvo, built like tanks...

you say you have noticed oil leaking...fuel consumption been off lately ??

and humming ? is the hum constant like breathing problems ?

it's hard to diagnose cars from the net....hence my failed online car repair forum

electrics on Volvo cars are fairly sound, Lambda, Airflow meters are usually sound, the thing is with Volvo's which everybody knows about is they have a heavy chassis and a heavier engine to power them, thus exhaust problems and breathing being resticted through the outlet of gases...this will cause the car to run lumpy for a while increasing fuel,and more likely to cause the emmissions to go back into the chamber, pressurising the engine (oil leak)...a seal via gaskets, when was the exhaust last replaced ?

just need to find what the hum is ?

I had a volvo 440 for a while got rid around 140K as the ignition was breaking down, would have loved a 760 estate but funds didn't allow

Currently driving an 02 plate Mondeo estate, cost me less than putting my old Peugeot 807 into the dealer to diagnose the water leak & air bag warning light, so far only cost me a couple of tyres, brakes & some wheel studs.

Gaffer tape the pipe back up, then check the wiring harness is properly connected to MAF (mass airflow meter), then hoover your air filter,
While the airfilter box is disconnected spray some engine starter gas into the MAF while getting someone to start the car, this should tell you if the MAF is opening/closing. If not you may have some junk in there thats stopping the delicate butterfly doors opening/closing.

you may also have a smaller tube going past the MAF into the manifold, check that aint blocked by blowing though it, Good luck

If all else fails get someone to plug an OBD11 diagnostics into it, although it sounds like you have a whole bunch of errors.
then look up the diag codes online. usually a letter then xxxx numbers
the letter indicates engine/gearbox/suspension ect the 4 numbers indicate parts

apparently so, volvo were using OBDII before it was standard in 96, a bit hit n miss if yours has it or not tho Pred. check under the coin tray it says here.
