I'm helping a client who has their domain and hosting with 123reg.

The site is painfully slow and I'm wondering what is causing it-is it me or them? It's only a Wordpress install...
I've been using tools.pingdom.com to measure the performance and the wait times are utterly insane. I had 14 seconds just now.

Is this likely to be specific to 123reg shared hosting?

Thanks for your help.

Most shared hosting is the same to be honest, they cram all the sites they can onto a server. No real skin of their noses to how fast your site is...

That being said it is usually a cheaper option so unfortunately you get what you pay for.

Your own server can be a touch more expensive but you have lots of SEO benefits, so I guess it is up to to decide if your sites could produce £50 a month extra if they resolved quicker, higher in the rankings and you had more control over them.

Without seeing your sites it's impossible to say if it is wordpress or 123-reg, but my money is on the shared hosting.

Sounds like you need to ditch the 'moon on a stick' shared hosting and get a decent decent but affordable hosting provider.
How much space and transfer do you actually use?

The few WP sites I have on HostGator take an age for the site to initially load when I visit them, once on the site, they are quick going from page to page, just a pain getting the site to load first off, I'm sure it doesn't help with ranking, and if I was a visitor going to my sites sites, I wouldn't wait as long as I do. Html sites load fast, just WP is a pain in the @rse.

Thanks for the comments folks. The hosting wasn't my choice I've just been assisting with the site build, though I've got to say I'm quite happy with the speed of the WP installs on my Tso reseller account.

I'll persevere with trying it on my hosting then, just wrestling with databases at the moment...

Have you got WP Super Cache installed?

Also, not sure if this is relevant, but I had that mod php speed thing active and apparently it causes conflict with WP installs - so I turned it off. Don't know if 123-reg have it though.
