We host our websites on Streamline but a customer has just told us that a number of her emails from her customers are not getting through and some test emails she's done are not getting through.

She uses Streamline's own mail service - as opposed to a contact form forwarding emails to a different email service (which all of our other websites do).

Is there any other UK hosting co that is reliable?

PS - Sorry if this is not the right section.

hosting

I use Xilo.net UK based servers, cpanel - reseller hosting with unlimited domains etc all the bells and whistles
they do windows too but I have always had cpanel linux

Streamline forwarding does not always work well - their redirects may appear to be set up, but the mail is "blackholed" - it depends on serendipity if the system works.

I have a domain with them for historic reasons (ie I can't be bothered to move it, I just pay to keep it). I learned early that their mail system only works if you use it at source. Plus, if you don't "tend the site", the "black hole" is applied.

Even if you're paying, some companies are obsessively tidy...

Many thanks for replies. The customer has now - belatedly - identified the problem as a full deleted email box and so this MAY not be a long-term problem.

However, Crabfoot, I was concerned about what you said that losing emails is a common Streamline problem - is this just when they suspect it's a spam email address from the sender? We've changed out contact form so that the emails are always "sent" officially from the customer's own website email account with the sender's email as a text line within the email itself. Will this eliminate the problem you mentioned?

Or are you saying it's better to use the Streamline email system rather than redirect to another email system (which we do cos their email system is a pain to use).

I should have qualified my statements, because on reflection it is around four years since I stopped using their email - things might be getting better in the meantime.

The site I have with Streamline was for a now-defunct blues band. When I first set it up, I applied redirects for each band member, and any the mail sent to those addresses disappeared - it was not forwarded, and did not appear in the Streamline system.

Removing the redirects allowed the mail to appear in band members' individual mailboxes. We settled for that.

The band disbanded, I kept the domain but did nothing with it. When I went to check the mail after long inactivity, the mail service had been downgraded, the mailboxes had been shut down and the mail was blackholed.

They didn't tell me it was happening - I presume they sent emails to the domain, which were wiped.

It's not like they don't know my email - they send me the hosting bills ...

The redirects didn't work. The Streamline system worked, as long as it was regularly checked.
