Indeed, the larger mesosphere & ionospheres above provide a lot of protection, but the layer we live in is pretty thin! Most people drive/walk greater than it's height every day.

Never, with this gesture he has honored his mentor Kittinger. That was actually quite clear when he opened the parachute at 3000m, he also admitted that during the first german interview. The aim was m1, not to delete all records from Kittinger. This was typical for Baumgartner.

Yes I thought that too, 3000m was well above his safety margin and he was certainly well in control to increase his drag much earlier than that. It looked to be intentional
