Just as there is a level playing field for Tagholders trying to catch .uk domains as they are deleted.
Any advantage or greater success is purely due to some dropcatchers having better systems – according to Nominet.
Several reasons might be behind this view,
1. It is a fact and therefore true.
2. Resources are not used to actively police the process, therefore there is no evidence to challenge the view.
3. Catching offenders would show a failure in the process, requiring resources to fix it, and to provide an affective deterrent.
4. It does not matter who gets the domains, as long as normal efforts are made to contact the previous Registrant and invite renewal.
Reason 1 ought to be valid but from observing drops it seems virtually impossible.
Since I am not a dropcatcher Reason 4 would be acceptable with a reasonable distribution of catches, but the latest drop was exceptionally unbalanced.
Perhaps it could be explained if certain Tagholders agreed not to compete for the same names, and linked their Tags, not assuming that they only have one Tag each.
I believe that something is wrong here, and I am concerned about Nominet’s inability to acknowledge this or fix it. Monopolies are not good.
