Right, anyone know how to check leakage ?

What i mean is like you own xxxxx.co.uk but not xxxxx.com

So how do you know ?

I figured if anything it would be how many people typed xxxxx.com before going to xxxxx.co.uk

You could never know how many people goto.com instead of .co.uk if they don't then goto .co.uk afterwards ?

Tanks !!!

I mean Thanks !!! ( yes i am bored ) The question is serious though.

Hi

Don't think so, you can guestimate leakage - by looking at perhaps the traffic on a few equivalent names.

Try the following, look at some some of the more obscure .gov.uk sites that where the .com & .co.uk are on parked pages & use Alexa TR to give you an idea of leakage from the gov.uk site to the respective .co.uk & .com. You can also try looking at some of the lower ranking .co.uks that are squatted by someone who owns the .com and has put it on blatant TM infrining parking page & compare the Alexa ranks.

Hope that helps.

The biggest kick in the teeth comes from Microsoft who (unless you change it) auto include www.?.com to whatever you type in the address bar and press CTRL+Enter.

Try typing caught and hitting ctrl+enter and watch what happens, so leakage .co.uk to .com is massive for people who use the ctrl+enter shortcut.

I also found that .com gets ranked dozen+ places above .co.uk even tho I have linked to both equal on my test domains.

Skin, i never use xxxx ? ctl and return but i see what you mean, not fair mate !!!

How can you give precedance to a certain extension

I have never heard of using ctrl + enter either, if I ever typed a word in a browser it would be enter word and hit enter, which on Opera browser goes to the .co.uk version when trying "caught".

Why do they call ctrl + enter a shortcut, hitting enter on it's own is shorter.

Systreg : eg, Loans and return will give you various results.

Loans and ctl and return will go straight to the .com

Poor Acorndomains,i am sure they don't own the .com ? Which i find ironic for a domain forum, especially as it was regged after the forum started.

Admin or mods : can you explain please ?

I was looking into Chanelle Hayes name the other day and the .net was regged a day before the .com/.co.uk, which made no sense to me, but people have their reasons :)

I assume the .co.uk was ti give it a higher precedence in the UK market.

Systreg: You have altered Opera to default to .co.uk, because because I just downloaded opera to my new laptop and installed it and that goes to the .com when I type caught.

IE you have to do a registry hack to make to make it do .co.uk, but when you consider that IE has something like 70%+ of the browser market means operas <5% and firefoxes 15%ish and the others, opera is really neither here nor there on the leakage chart. IE if you don't do CRTL+Enter performs a search using your desinated search pane, or it goes to a "I'm Feeling Lucky", type result page.

All the major browsers do this unless you change it to .co.uk.

@ Skinner, nothing has been changed on my Opera browser or the registry, I wouldn't know how to do that, I dowloaded the new Version 9.63 of Opera the other day, not changed any setting since it downloaded, and it automatically goes to .co.uk when hitting the enter button.

Would it be something to do with this being an ancient Windows 98 computer with Ubuntu Linux installed on it?

Just out of interest, if I type "caught" in to the browser on FireFox and hit enter, it takes me to Google.com search results pages for the word, caught.
