This may sound stupid, but if I buy a domain from someone and then transfer it via nominet and pay the £12 fee, it is then registered to myself and appears in my nominet account. If I want to use the domain, I presume I then register the domain using a registrar, like 1and1 for instance and then I have to pay a yearly fee to 1and1. What would happen if I never registered the name via 1and1 and just left it and didnt use the domain name? Would it still always be registered to myself and I wouldn't have to pay any yearly fee?

Regards

As the buyer or receiver in a UK transfer you'd have to designate a tag. 1and1's tag would be SCHLUND.

Usually as the receiver I believe (not 100%) that you should have an account with 1and1 and have already paid to transfer this domain in (which may give you a 1 year renewal too). By doing this before the transfer, 1and1 will know to assign this name to your account when the domain is put on their tag (after the transfer).

I expect that if you don't have the account, pay the transfer/first renewal, that they have control over the domain and can release it if they don't receive the payment.

As a TAG holder, I know that I had the choice to accept domains automatically that are placed on my TAG or reject them, some registrars may operate to reject names that have not already be registered with them as pending transfer in.

To "use" the domain you need to point it somewhere, this is generally a "web host" who will provide you with access to dns, email & web server, however, there is no requirement to point your domain anywhere and you will only then have to pay renewals to prevent deletion.

You don't have to use 1and1 or other large companies, there are many smaller companies offering much better service. You can even run your own server should you have the technical skill.

Transfer it to us and I will give you free hosting to use your domain for basic site or email etc, if you show me proof of payment or agreement, i will even transfer it for free for you, just get seller to release the domain to tag LOWREG

before anyone thinks I'm spamming, remember its for free and only helping a forum member :)

When I accepted the transfer via nominet it assigned it to 1and1 automatically. I then logged in to 1and1 and ordered/transferred the domain on my account. It seems to be ok now.

Another question, I cancelled a few domains a while ago on my nominet account, but they seem to have been automatically renewed via 1and1. I presume to cancel a domain, I need to cancel via 1and1 and not nominet.

I've had some really bad experiences with 1and1 charging me for domains for months after they were no longer with me. I was contacting billing and support for months, they bounced me around while they charged me for the next month and the next. I assumed they'd figure it out and refund. In the end I had to cancel my credit card...
