.UK Announced

Thanks, sorry I meant could you elaborate on your orginal post "What's more interesting is the question to which that answer was given."
about the above question.
Sorry - maybe I haven't been following this as closely as others, but this is the first time I've seen any mention of the .uk debacle raised at government level.

Thanks.

It is the first time I have also seen it mentioned at Government level and thanks to Andrew Bennett for bringing the event to everybody's attention.

I have sent emails to Edward Vaizey as many others on this forum I'm sure have but to date I have not had a response.

Crikey, that was my MP, I can expect a reply back saying "shut up shop and get a .com" then :)

Well hopefully it was you bringing the matter to his attention that got the matter on record.

Do you have your MP's email address so I can try and follow up with him with some points Edward Vaizey did not mention in his reply?

Can't believe that quote by Edward Vaizey. Can't be further from the truth about the way small businesses have been consulted by nominet. I will also be writing to him. I think I'll print off all the documents and send by post to House of Commons. Not sure if email is better these days - what do you think? I'll send a copy to the Stevenage MP. I'm still in correspondence with nominet over this very subject. So might wait for the latest reply.

Have just sent an email to Stephen McPartland (Stevenage, Conservative) the MP who raised the question
but received the automated email stating "MP's only allowed to answer questions from constituients"
so suggest frame your reply as additional information and maybe suggest he raise further questions?

I think it would be good if Stephen McPartland received a few email from Acorn members giving their view of what the answer didnt mention?
and suggest he may wish to consider raising an additional question or 2?

I think if you have the time an email and the follow it up with the post.

I would suggest the best plan would be to print off all the most relevant documents (from Edwin's site if he agreed) and then to courier them to both of these people.

Please feel free to print anything from my site that you think would help the cause. I'm not going to be personally writing to any MPs, but I applaud any effort in that direction!

If nominet were a person it would be classed as Schizophrenic. Is this April Fools Day? When was this email sent out LordBull?

As part of our ongoing marketing programme to raise the profile of .co.uk, we are inviting registrars targeting small businesses and start ups, to get in touch to work with us on a new digital advertising campaign.

We are looking for partner registrars to create a dedicated .co.uk branded landing page that solely offers new .co.uk registrations directly to customers and includes a bespoke domain spinner.

So that we can monitor effectiveness, registrars who take part in the campaign must also be able to accurately track the traffic that is driven to their .co.uk landing page by activating a pixel tag, and be willing to share the subsequent conversion rates. To drive additional traffic, a link to the bespoke landing page from the home page should also be in place.

Our marketing activity will run between end January - end June. We are offering each successful registrar a weighted share of impressions for 4 weeks of activity at some point during this time period.

We will select the first 6 partners who respond and meet the necessary criteria to work with us on the campaign.

If you would be interested in taking part, please e-mail us at [email protected] by Tuesday 15th January 2013 to register your interest, and full details of the criteria can be provided.

My graphic is still available should any registrar wish to use it in their campaign :)

Nominet want and need .uk to be able to run along side .co.uk to double the revenue stream that they currently achieve it is not in their interest for .uk to supersede .co.uk

Thanks Lord Bull - you must have thought you were hallucinating :)

Ed Vaizey

Just been doing a little bit of research on Ed Vaizey and his work and can see that he was a key speaker at Nominet's Annual UK Internet Policy Forum 2012. Interesting little quote from the summary document:

'In the UK, the internet is largely considered an environment where self-regulatory solutions are preferable. Indeed, Ed Vaizey, in his keynote speech, repeatedly expressed the UK Government’s desire for self-regulatory solutions supplemented only where necessary by a “light touch” statutory response.'

Here is the link if anyone wants a read. Some interesting info in there.

New article about .uk proposal

New article about .uk proposal

Digital rights campaigners warn of Nominet gaining 'monopoly over trust and security' with new .uk domain offering

http://www.out-law.com/en/articles/2013/january/digital-rights-campaigners-warn-of-nominet-gaining-monopoly-over-trust-and-security-with-new-uk-domain-offering/

The ORG said Nominet should provide "evidence" that supports a need to address consumer trust issues with online services. It said it was concerned that Nominet's proposal would lead to the creation of a "walled garden". This would in turn "inevitably seriously undermine other domain space such as.co.uk, and could undermine the market for online security services," the group claimed.

This is a big change to their last article on 1st October 2012 which was a rehash of The Nominet press release:
http://www.out-law.com/en/articles/2012/october/proposed-new-uk-domain-would-offer-greater-security-for-business-claims-nominet/

Maybe there might be time to put pressure on Nominet if this is the sort of thing that gets published.
