.uk .UK Announced

.uk is just so much better than co.uk and would help professionalise the appearance of the uk internet industry. It is therefore inevitable that it will happen in some form one day so I don't think there is any point trying to stop it completely.

It just looks so bad:

www.google.de
www.google.fr
www.google.co.uk

They should have thought of that before they got 9,000,000 users to brand their .co.uk for them, the cost of re-branding now is massive and who is going to pay ? the consumer. Who is going to profit ? the entity that made the mistake in the first place.
.

Is it profiteering ? I think it may well be.

To get the word out to the masses I suggest those who have portfolio of parked domains to forward the traffic to single or same holding page for period of time , say 24 hrs but the longer the better. On that parking page we should have nice and simple message that would engage the visitor. i.e. “ do you have .co.uk website or do you work for employer who has .co.uks - proposed changes will affect your or your employers business”. Then simple link to content with further explanation.

I will take part in this. We need a plan, same holding page for the campaign, the content and if we all do at same time the impact will be huge. Also banners can be used on existing sites. The word will get out.

We have many people here who care. Edwin’s paper is good read on the subject so that can be brought to attention. Those with hosting capacity could provide simple parking for this. We all have something to contribute and stop this Internet Tax.

Yep I've got 2000 or so domains I'd do it on if everyone is going to do so!

Agree with all the recent sentiments.

However, we can unfortunately go round on this on here until the cows come home and not effect change.

If you think my position paper helps the case, then please do whatever you can to get it noticed outside the domain community.

Do you have friends working for companies that would be impacted by the change? Or clients? Or do you work for someone that would be affected? Then let them know.

Do you blog, tweet or Google+? Then why not post about the issue in simple, clear terms that any business owner would understand.

Are you a member of non-domaining forums with a relevant audience? Then why not let people know what's going on?

Do you know a journalist, an MP, or someone with clout (e.g. a person with a HUGE Twitter following)? Then make sure they know about this issue.

And so on, and so forth. This has to be a collective effort if we're to have any chance at all of reaching a wider audience.

Hand on heart, this isn't about MY proposal. I really don't care if you want to re-iterate the issue in your own words, and you certainly aren't forced to link to my http://www.mydomainnames.co.uk/ issue site. This is all about spreading the message.

Oh, and if you told some people yesterday, then tell some other people today. And other folks tomorrow. There are millions of people who will be impacted by this, so we're not about to run out of "targets"!

Slow and steady wins the race.

Edwin are you aware of the existence and current use of mydomainname.co.uk ?

You can't just change something that "looks bad" in your opinion... you ask the 4m or so people that pay to lease the .co.uk domains (that Nom themselves remember were pushing up until a couple of months ago) and have a proper consultation... with one of the options being to keep the status quo. Something that is not happening here!

Sorry a domain suffix alone does not "professionalise the industry".

Nominet had professionalised the industry with a good DRS system and domain registry.

They are now seemingly trying to look like the fools they obviously are, for pushing through something that does not have an "equal consensus".

By that I mean that for every registrar/member, irrespective of domain numbers held, there should be one vote. For god's sake you don't run an election based on the richer you are the more votes you get (well some may argue you do!).

A lot of domainers and businesses are up in arms because this 'consultation' feels anything but.

My point is that the Uk internet industry is only what, 15 years old, do you really think in 20 years time we will still be using co.uk and not .uk?

Yes it was a mistake, but it is one that needs correcting.

Why not? What is actually wrong with sub extensions being used forever after?

1,500 eyeballs per day heading your way, for now.

Will support max_rk if a lander or site is developed. Funding can be provided by myself.

That is the spirit. We should let media know what is happening so impact will even bigger. I floated the idea, I would take part by offering my traffic but someone has to take initiative and to put all things together. Edwin how do you feel about this, Graywing anyone else?

Not until now, didn't cross my mind to look. I was too busy revising and re-revising my paper and stuffing more stats into it to do more than a double-quick effort getting the site up and running in time for Monday morning.

.uk Registrar Conference 2012 - Wednesday 21st November, London

"This year's Nominet .uk registrar conference has been designed to open the floor to all our registrar community and give everyone the chance to have their say on Nominet's consultation on the new .uk domain service. To date we have had a large response with a range of considerations flagged across a number of different areas.
As a valued member of our registrar community, this event will provide you with the opportunity to really contribute in shaping our proposals. The session will host panel debates with opinion and insight from all types of registrar business and representatives from registrars of different size and business models. In addition we will be looking to hear audience views on all the issues discussed and Nominet staff will be on hand to answer any questions.
"

just booked a place

I can't even begin to imagine the sort of manipulation the launch event will bring, remember the .eu days?

Nominet meetings

We have organised three roundtable meetings, which we hope will broadly cater to the many stakeholders that have an interest in the proposals. These meetings taking place in London are an opportunity for stakeholders to share their views on the proposed new service with Nominet and each other.

If you are a Nominet registrar of any size, type and business model please register your interest in the session dedicated to registrars on Tuesday 6 November 2012, 10.30 – 13.00.

If you are a registered company, have a registered trademark, or a company that has an online presence please register your interest in the session on Wednesday 7 November 2012, 10.30 – 13.00. You might be a small or large business that already has a web presence or a company thinking about getting online. You might also represent an industry organisation or trade association.

Stakeholders that represent civil rights, consumers, a public body such as a local council, or from an academic background might wish to register for the session for civil society, consumer advocacy bodies, public organisations and academia on Friday 9 November 2012, 10.30 – 13.00.

We expect these meetings to be popular so would encourage you to register your interest as soon as possible for the session which is most appropriate for you. We will endeavour to accommodate as many people as we can, however only one representative per organisation will be accepted for each session. If there is sufficient demand we will provide extra sessions as necessary.

Just received Nominet confirmation email today of my place on 6th & 7th November in London

Nominet is still cocky enough to think they will get their own way then, that is opening up the second level.

Asking Registrars (top vote wielding ones) if they would like Christmas dinner every day for a few years will hardly be the voice of the wider community.

Nice job Edwin.

Right alongside the sale of webhosting.co.uk though at $500,000. It'll be interesting to see if this sale is going to be confirmed and to whom! Doesn't look very well placed for getting the .uk version right now, by my interpretation.

".co.uk a great place to be" ad on smarta.com middle page right. Partnering Registrars seem to be put in rotation: easyspace, 123, Heart, DM etc.

Rule #1: Be Respectful

Do not insult any other member. Be polite and do business. Thank you!
