.UK Announced

Nominet gov and nhs?

Anyone seen the new government domain? GOV.uk? There's also NHS.uk too.

it is interesting that Nominet have not redirected traffic from gov.co.uk and nhs.co.uk as these are reserved, on whois lookup it states;

Error for "gov.co.uk".

This domain cannot be registered because it contravenes the Nominet UK
naming rules. The reason is:
third-level domains may not be identical to a UK second-level domain.

WHOIS lookup made at 10:28:49 02-Nov-2012

should somebody tell them?

Yes, bewildering.

The replies are typical of those who have no clue how the Internet works, unfortunately getting the message across to "ordinary" people is extremely difficult

Ha ha - yes a pretty "average" audience that are there because they want to save themselves some money... rather than worry about how things actually work to save them money. Since when have domains been £2... ffs.

Anyone tried the UKBusinessForums.co.uk? ( i think that is it... sorry not checked myself .... they are usually a reasonably vocal bunch and can be quite militant if they think their business is going to be charged more cash!)

Unless we all opposes the way this is being railroaded in, what's next... we have to go buy .gb and .england.

Yes probably if you care that much about your domains - and so what, its peanuts to most businesses to own 3 or 4 domains (domainers might feel differet abouit it)

Whatever the outcome of the .UK thing there will be something futher down the line .eng, .gb, this type of domain evolution can't be stopped.

I think even if .UK proposal is binned .co.uk shelf life is limited anyway. Its going to be old hat - i'm sure in 10, 15 years time people will have different values and ideas about domain names than they do now

- so it begs the question what are we actually protecting here..?

The difference between .eng and .gb is that they sound and appear nothing like the .co.uk does to .uk

The issue for me is confusion not competition

James, thanks… excellent article.

I will be raising awareness of this whole issue with a large UK SME network with the release of a short briefing paper first thing Monday morning. I will include a link to this and other articles and videos, together with the Nominet proposition and consultation form.

It is truly shameful that these wider business “stakeholders” have been ignored in this consultation process. Do Nominet have something to hide?

Nominet meeting 6th November

London meeting nominet .uk consultation meeting today 6th November

Interesting to hear what Nominet has to say and the wide range of opinion expressed, no clear change in nominet position although they stress that nothing has been decided and they are there to listen.

Did find out that as proposal stands not only would eu trademark holders have first rights to the .uk also USA trademarks would also have rights over .co.uk owners as their is a reciprocal agreement with USA! Which even worse than I feared.

Also this secuity DNSSEC is available now on .co.uk but only 2500 have taken it up whereas currently Nominet intend to make it compulsory on .uk

Edwin was the main contributor to the meeting.

I have a place booked tomorrow, if anybody has any questions they want me to raise, please pm or post, in addition to;

1. In their planning how much do they think will raise from all the auctions?
2. Have they taken legal advise about possible claims from parties that dont get the .uk they want

So they are proposing that to register a .uk you have to be a UK registrant yet a USA trademark holder has a valid claim ? :rolleyes:

Or a Slovakian, Pole, Hungarian or any other of our European friends.

Did they say the EU/USA trademark holder must have a registered business address here in the UK? surely a requirement?

Their own words:
"Proposed key features include; verification to check a registrant has a UK address"

Sounds like the entire plan was hatched on the back of a fag packet down the pub !
