.UK Announced

What If

Supposing we take this proposal at face value and accept this is all about wanting, or feeling pressured, to offer a secure space. It feels like chasing the Holy Grail, but for now at least, I'm putting all of the arguments to one side.

What if we look at the security issue as the "devil" and try to disable it by invention. What if we put our creative hats on and came up with some better, cheaper, alternatives. We may at least be able to take the sting out of the tail.

I've come up with one proposal for owner verification, which is driven by the consumer, cheap to implement and doesn't impede the registration process. It just needs you lot to pull it apart, and then come up with something better. I started a thread on it a few days ago, but I think everyone's in here!

Have a read and let's have you're ideas:

It timed out for me (several times), but I did receieve the logon details so it may have gone through OK

Mark, something involving HMRC would work IMO. Good thinking. Just down to technicalities of implementation I think, but not insurmountable even if part of another security package.

As I posted in the other thread, Nominet has already moved the goalposts since announcing the initial consultation (which makes debate somewhat confusing sometimes). From the LATEST version of their FAQ:

Are you restricting direct .uk registrations to UK-based businesses?

No. Under the proposals, anyone who has a UK address for service – and whose contact details can be verified - would be entitled to apply for a direct.uk domain name.

http://www.nominet.org.uk/how-parti...y-discussions-and-consultations/direct-uk-faq

So any verification solution that relied on UK-based databases would automatically fail.

I'm not trying to look at the issue in the same way that Nominet have defined it; after all, those are just words at this stage.

What the other thread is trying to do is generate some alternative ways of offering a secure space for UK consumers. It does seem to me that the onus is on us to come up with some alternatives.

Could you just clarify for me who is "us" ?

Those who oppose the proposal as it stands; which I thought was the large majority around here.

Who did you think I meant?

I didn't know, but I don't think the onus is on the people who disagree with the proposals to overcome the security issues. I don't quite see why you do.
You are treating it as if Nominet are saying "solve this or else ".

Question….. Are you just forcing co.uk owners to buy another name ?

Answer…… Not at all, we expect that there will be some users, such as bloggers, who will not require the additional features we are proposing to include with this new service. Because of this, we plan to continue to offer the existing co.uk org.uk and me.uk spaces. Users will then have the choice to register a new .uk domain and benefit from the additional features or continue to use their existing domains.

So the answer to this question should read no just 99.5% of them.

How patronising is that.

There's very little in this proposal that makes any sense to me, but I do get a feeling that we're likely to see security enhancements in one form or another at some point. It's in my interest to help find the most viable/cost effective way of doing it.

I just think that that should be a separate and later effort, it could be taking one's eye off the ball.

Security is a problem but that's nothing new, it's ongoing, why wrap it up in costings of £10 billion plus to the consumer. I personally don't mind Nominet making additional money but not from me as a trusting consumer.

Can you imagine if government said because of benefit fraud we are holding all benefit claimants to ransom.

If it hangs for anyone else, try clicking refresh. That's what I did and it took me to the confirmation screen.

Proper shabby though!!

October renewals and registrations ?

If you sign up to Nominet's Business Intelligence reports you get a good idea of what might be going on. Renewal rates have dropped pretty dramatically in recent months and is now a much bigger influence on the amount of domains registered.

Interesting that back in August few agreed that the Register would decrease in size.

Stephen.

Do you any upto date figures please for October renewals and registrations, to see if the .uk proposal has had any effect yet?

It's still timing out but I believe Nominet are receiving the registration. They need to fix it because it's confusing. Also if you return to the page you have to delete cookies in your browser in order to be able to register again.

Has anyone who has attempted to register not received an email from Nominet with the webcast details in?

I still have not recieved my details :(

I'm not sure if the Intelligence Reports are confidential or not - the figures are much more up to date compared to the final figures that appear on the Nominet website.

Why don't you sign up?

Cheers
Stephen.
