Just out of interest why is a "UK individual" allowed to have whois opt-out ? What gives them more right than any business ? now that isn't the same for all.

and if I want to reg .co.uk domains from my villa in Turkiye,
why can I not opt-out?

If that's all you want the public whois to do, then all you need is another address in they style of postmaster@ (Which all domains running MTAs in accordance with the RFCs are mandated to monitor) for domain adminstration releated contacts. Would that be good enough?

Do we really need both a whois for domain registration, and one for IP addresses? Is the contact details of the person responsible for the IP good enough?

If the answer is that neither of those is good enough - then you're left with something like the current whois.

Sorry, I wasn't clear enough on the issue of correctness. There are two elements

1. The registrant name. We treat whoever is down in this field as the registrant. So if a third party has their name in there, because they are doing it on behalf of someone else then as far as we are concerned the third party IS the registrant and the person they are doing it on behalf of is not. So, this field cannot contain an agents data.

2. The address. The principle we work to here is 'correct for contact', in other words you can put in the address of an agent or forwarding service, provided that any communications we send will get to you - it must work.

I should also point out that gTLD policy is in not really relevant to us. All ccTLDs make local policy decisions about the data we publish.
