I've been making/designing my own little mini sites for about a year now.

Adding some google adsense and some simple affiliate text links in general.

But today I came across a page showing the standard sizes of gif banners and it occurred to me that in all this time I've never considered incorporating these standard sizes into my own sites.

Does anyone here build their own sites while bearing these standard sizes in mind during the process.

they look like default adsence sizes to me...

They are standard sizes from the 90s, long before advertising but it seems advertising picked the numbers (and may have set them). I use them as a guideline for fitting stuff above the fold.

They was all based around the 640 x 480 display hense the 468x60 being the most common banner size in the world, but with the average vdu (dig the 90s techtalk) size increasing, they came up with 728x90 to accomadate the 800x600 display, I think some new sizes are in effect mostly around the 800/900 x 120/160 headers to accomadate 1024/768 displays which is about the most popular size now, but being pushed up to 1280 x ? depending on widescreen or not.

I generally stick to 180px wide side bars which allows 160x600/800 tower blocks, and allow upto 160px high headers or 200px if including the menu bar, footers I stick to 120px. So yeah I use standardish numbers.

If your using advertising then you need to allow for them sizes totally :)
