To all the seasoned link builders, what are the first sites you would hope to get listed on?

I prefer diversity. However, when a new website is launched it is a good time to write a press release about the website. The release should be submitted with the link and the website will be indexed quite quickly.

I also use my own blog at blogger.com to get the first inlinks.

I agree with the advice about press releases too.

Any decent free press release submission sites, or do the best ones charge? It's the one area I've never really looked into SEO-wise.

Most of them are free and many has high PR so they are good for SEO. If you use Google you can find a lot of good lists of PR websites.

Just few months back, I used to submit my site in Digg as it was then offering do follow links but now things have changed and now I try to book mark in some other bookmarking site to get my site indexed in major search engine quickly.

Same here. Or i you have other sites you link to it via those in a bid to get indexed mfast. It's of course especially useful it they're of a related theme.

I was recommended to try vilesilencer .com a long time ago, but I've never used it ...

My technique is to look for blogs or forum posts where the users might find my info useful, then put posts including a link.

Good newish UK based one is Free UK Press Releases. Its been accepted into Google news and so is indexed very quickly. I had an article approved recently and it appeared in Google News 8 minutes later!

I started a brand new website the other day (live), as a parked domain it had 2-5 hits to the parking page, I submited a site map to yahoo, google, ask and yahoo, within 9 days google has spidered 1500 pages, and started about 4 minutes after I submited the sitemap, yahoo have spridered about 500, and msn 9, so sitemaps seems a good method :)
