Who dabbles in .com's?

I've never considered .com's myself, values are so very high compared to .uk's and the entire process of acquiring and catching seems very different, but have any of you made the switch over or carry a reasonably large .com portfolio?

How do you generally acquire, buy through sedo etc, catch, or just have legacy domains from a time gone by? Any of you taken on the world of lll .com's, as prices seem astronomical; not much scope to buy in and make profit unless very certain that prices will continue to rise.

.com is by far and away the leading domain extension, so anyone looking to make good money in domaining should pay particular attention to this extension.

From the constant stream of meaningless .coms I've seen posted on here and on other forums, I'm convinced there's a forum somewhere that complete idiots sell other complete idiots rubbish domains.

On a serious note, unless you've serious money to invest, it seems to me a bit like a lottery. The guidelines for valuing a .co.uk domain seem to fly out of the window when it comes to .coms.

This is my feeling at the moment, you see domains like furryanimalsarethebest.com (example) sell for thousands and like you say, it is most likely idiots selling to idiots until one day the price is too high!

I do a bit and I have a portfolio of .coms that I acquired by looking for a specific domain and buying from SEDO/namejet or simply a free to reg that I thought would resell.

For example, I bought buywebsite.com for just under $1k on namejet and sold it via SEDO for $3500. As mentioned, its bigger numbers than .co.uk but rewards are there if you get it right. You are more likely to get a big ticket winner on .com than .co.uk

That example confuses me even more! I'd not have spent £10 on buywebsite.com never mind $1k. Nice sale though, you've obviously tuned in to what does and doesn't sell in .com.

lll.com's are incredibly high, but do they actually sell? Would anyone in their right mind entertain £30k+ purchases on the most obscure letters at this time?

I'm not involved in .com at all currently. Feeling more and more that I should be though - with the ongoing challenges thrown up by Nominet.

All the good ones are legacy (NJ & GD).

If that's confused you how about me selling resveratrol.info for $10,000. I'm pretty sure the buyer made it back as well riding on the wave of a lot of press at the time and heavy affiliate selling of the supplements. I had to throw in some SEO but the domain was a free to reg so it was a no brainer.

I have now moved over 100% to dot coms and will only be selling co.uk and not buying in the future

I have made good money from selling dot coms on Brandbucket they are very proactive at finding buyers.

Ask Bailey, he knows just how to profit on .coms. His skills however are rather intangible I find, and not necessarily easily repeated.

I used to have a reasonable .com portfolio. Now I have about 50 max, so small at best.

I obtained most of my mine at the time via ebay, sedo, namejet, snap names, godaddy and pool pretty much in that order. Buying from other domainers will empty your pocket quicker than lightening.

I never made huge sums but certain bigger sums than I make on .co.uk now :/

Can we continue to sell .co.uk and .uk above reg fee, sure, but .com is going to become even more desirable due to the above debacle.

Aside from barriers to entry and market differences, so lets assume equal skill and understanding between each, how are the other markets your heavily into aside from .com ?

1 or 2 have taken to the 2nd level, how have they panned out thus far ?

I posted this in the general board. Was surprised not to see a .com section tbh, but maybe threads like these are few and far between. Just wanted to raise some interesting debate. Fresh content on forum etc.

The purists with big portfolios of .co.uk domains will tell you its not needed and is a distraction from what is a .co.uk forum
The same people will tell you that all the new GTLD's are all going to fail and should have no part on the forum, in the past they were listened to and new forum ideas were dropped
