Will you be buying oldest registrations?

Would be interested to hear whether some people on here are planning on buying the oldest registration in the hope of getting the .uk.

I've been offered a .org.uk that's older than the .co.uk which was sold for quite a lot of money in the past. It's really like playing blackjack isn't it?

Edit - Oops. The .me.uk is actually the oldest. Still interested in people's opinions though.

I know some will and some won't lol. Was just seeing whether most people were/were not planning on buying the oldest registrations or not

It really depends on cost and return. Would you spend £1k on a .org.uk to save a £1k investment you spent on a .co.uk domain? How about £500? Of course things like branding, time etc come into play if you’ve developed a site, but the principle is the same.

Although the oldest registration first is looking to be the most popular release mechanism, there is still uncertainty which may deter people from buying up the earlier registrations. My feeling toward buying a domain of any value is that you should also try to register the alternatives simply to secure the branding.

Luckily I don’t have a large portfolio so under the current proposal I stand to keep all the domains I care about, although I won’t gain any. I did however have to acquire one domain to ensure I had the earliest registration, but really that was part of my wider strategy to ensure that I have the sets for the domains I’m developing.

I'm in a similar boat......although I'd lose out to an earlier .org.uk on one domain I'd rather keep.

I would think people are already doing this - but not likely to shout about it

In my view the only 'fair' conclusion is to scrap .co.uk, replace with .uk and all owners of .co.uk given the .uk

Anyone typing in .co.uk should redirect to the .uk (which would also mean smaller brands wont have to pay money on rebranding, at least initially)

This way:

1. We all rebrand to .uk;

2. The redirect lowers remarketing / rebranding costs initially for SMEs;

3. Commercial goes to commercial;


Giving people with non commercial domains (.org.uk, .me.uk's etc) instant rights to the new commercial equivalent (.uk) just because it's older is simply wrong.

If .uk is not designed as a commercial extension then I haven't seen anything to suggest what's it intention is.

Not been at the meetings, in which I'm sure many more angles are covered - but this seems to be the most fairest approach for the 'masses'

Personally already have and have received offers for org.uk and me.uk that indicates to me others are certainly , All domains are a gamble just the odds are a little longer if the name stands up then it would be a strange business strategy not too ?
