I don't have direct knowledge of this particular 'epic' but from past experience of how such media driven web success stories work it would not surprise me if I were to dig and then find that somewhere in the background there is a parent, brother, sister et.c of this chap who works in the media industry. This is probably not quite the 'wholesome' story it appears to be.

Remember Jeff Bezos of Amazon? He portrayed himself to the masses as this ordinary 'joe' who conceived a humble 'garage start up' business. In reality he was a millionaire former stock broker.

Tew isn't quite like this but the wool is being pulled. The media campaign was critical (in fact it was 'the product') to his success and it has been professionally crafted and executed, but I doubt by him alone imho.

I remember reading somewhere that, in addition to setting up the initial website etc, he paid a PR company/person to spread the word. It snowballed from there.

And if I read it then it must be true ;-)

Yes, a media pro's fingerprints can be seen all over this 'story' (spelt 'b-u-s-i-n-e-s-s'). It has all the 'constructed' ingredients to be 'newsworthy'. An apparently young and innocent student fresher just looking for some cash to pay his way through uni without getting into debt who just stumbled across a great idea, the kind of idea that anyone could have over cornflakes, and 'got lucky'. Mass media need mass stories and this story gets mass public empathy.

Am a a cynic? No I'm not. I analysed the 'life line' of this story, and I can spot a well written business plan a mile off.

The sums of money involved have probably also been exaggerated to make it more newsworthy- 'student has great idea but doesn't make much' isn't much of a story. It may turn him into a babe magnet at uni though.

That AlexTew dude - is the pied piper of the online advertising world...if anyone else had thought of that they would have scrubbed it out as a sh*t idea!

The MARKETING and PR person made it ..... plus, he is a student in the UK where they are all being taught the value of entrepreneurialism(.net) lol. This is a good way for the UK to be seen as an international place of commerce!

Gordon Brown will be happy with this...before he fights out the leadership with DC!! and I don't mean Washington...LOL Lex007!

perfect! - first he thought he had a million now hes going to have to pay it all back again - breach of contract.

i'm sure hes making these up just to stay in the press - any minute now hes going to announce another site or project.
