A Tentative Hello

Hi Everyone,

I have been mooching around on Acorn for a few days now and have finally plucked up the courage to join. I write under the name of Aiden Roberts so felt it made sense to use my www name to join, believe it or not I have started answering to Aiden; sad I know.

In case you were wondering why I say "plucked up the courage", it's because I have been investing in domain names for a sum total of 4 days so am literally a novice newbie and don't know the lingo or business yet.

It is difficult for me to state my best and worst domain names yet but lets start with the premise the 10 or so I have bought will all be rubbish as they were bought out of excitement so not informed purchases.

I have joined to be part of the community, to learn and hopefully to contribute. Enough from me and I look forward to participating.

I have a million questions but thought I was limited in post for two weeks, I can read just can't understand

I have been reading the posts here and realise I need to post my best and worst domains, I haven't bought any .co.uk yet but here are two I like from my purchases but will probably end up being useless:

I wasn't sure about these but bought them anyway:

nuale.com- Nu Ale.com or at least that's the way I saw it:roll:

Incidently as I live in the UK am I OK to buy and sell .eu names.

I have decided in my short time to start building my.co.uk portfolio as at least I can discuss them with real people on here.

stick to .UK Unless you have something to offer the Americans or you are branding something unique.. .com ignore everything else. Head over to Nominet if you fancy some light reading.

Don't buy too many more domains until you have actively tried to sell one. That is a great (and sobering) learning experience.

I haven't got round to that bit yet

I have parked them and was thinking of putting them in an auction, not because I expect to make a fortune but to see how it all works, I don't mind losing a little bit of money in the name of resarch.

The problem is; I didn't know my registrar won't transfer a name out before 60days; I should have read the TOS. I think I can put them on their auctions and hope someone with the same registrar buys them so I can move them internally?

I guess I have a lot to learn.

You can transfer a UK domain straight away but a TLD such as .com you need to wait for 60 days from the day of registration,that's not just your registrars rule but a rule in general.

I think you've started off on the right foot with such a thoughtful intro. I agree with others, in that having a good look around is better than registering lots of names. Check out domainlore.co.uk and domainprices.co.uk too.

I am like a kid in a sweet shop at the moment, I just hope I can retain some of the information I am reading.

I am glad for the advice about .co.uk and 60 day rule .com, I think I will stick them on an auction, state they have to stay within my registrar and take what I can get. I can then get on and investigate .co.uk domains.

What is a drop? I think it's a name that is about to come back to market but there seems to be a protocol for buying them, more for me to learn.

I know there is a vast amount of information on here and I am reading as much as I can as I go along but can anyone suggest any books worth getting hold off for when I am away from the computer.

Hi Aiden, a domain name will expire but won't actually become available on a first come first served basis for about 60 days and when it does then that is the day it drops (becomes available)

Hi Aiden and welcome, You certainly seem to have your head screwed on. feel free to ask any questions - most subjects return every few months or so, which tends to help all newcomers.

I am about to create a new thread about "member reps" nothing personal but their current use seems to have gone overboard.

Remember the auction method is most suited to those who are looking for an immediate return on reasonably popular terms - it won't work for "contrived terms" or those not in general/popular use.

Hi Bailey and thanks for your positive comments.

I am still none the wiser what a "green rep" is so I will search out your thread.

I have listed my impulse domain purchases on Sedo and GoDaddy auctions so hopefully will recoup my fees to invest in .uk extensions. Ironically I couldn't figure out how to list .eu names in the GD auction but am now thinking of promoting them directly to european insurance providers, watch this space.

I have learned so much on here in such a short space of time; my head is spinning. Thanks to the advice I have recieved I now have a blog for my domain business, ideas for developing mini sites including which platform to use, understand some of the terminology and bought my first .co.uk and .org.uk; it's been a hell of a week.

I am trying to find my own answers to questions before bombarding this forum, research teaches me so much. I would however appreciate any domaining business book recommendations.

Hi Aiden,

Welcome to the forum.

The best piece of advice you'll get from this forum, you've already had and that is don't rush into buying anything too quick. Buying is the easy part, selling for a decent profit is the tricky bit, but with some research particularly of this forum you'll soon pick it up.

Most of us on here (myself included) have probably registered a lot when we started that with hindsight are best described as embarassingly awful !

The hard part is admitting you made a mistake so come renewal time you'll renew it in the mistaken belief that it isn't really that bad and someone will buy it for a huge profit.

As far as questions go, There are a lot of experienced members on here that will be happy to answer questions especially where it is a specific question and it shows you've done some research before asking, what won't won't go down well is the type of question that just asks, tell me everything you've learnt over the last 10/15 years so I can make a fortune in domains overnight.

You sound like you have the right attitude, so my advice is take it slow, don't spend too much money yet until you get a feel for what's good and bad.

### Stay away from anything trademark related. It just isn't worth the hassle. You will regret it ##

I understand what you mean about rushing in to buying names, petty I didn't join here before I bought my first few; ah well.

I try to learn first and ask second, at least that way I stand a chance of understanding the advice given.

I am really grateful for the sound advice I have been given as it is unusual for people to help complete strangers without compensation.
