Google change and update their algorithm all the time, why are you afraid of something that happens every other day? Google are always trying to improve their search service

Eh? Before this affects a huge number of websites in a single blow, something you don't see on smaller regular updates.

I never said that small updates effect a large number of websites, obviously, logically, the larger the update the larger the amount of websites it's going to affect.

Why panic about Google "updating next month", there's aboustly nothing you can do until they explain the changes..

You asked "why be afraid". These annual events literally bankrupt and cause job losses. Why wouldn't webmasters be worried?

If you're afraid, you're probably doing it wrong.

We all know its an algorithm thats coming again at some point.... you should really be planning around it being positive for you and looking forward to it.

This is why I don't pander to google, and avoid any suspect methods, slowly but surely wins the race. Unless your style is churn and burn, then slow the hell down and let them bring all the pandas in asia and all the penguins in the arctic :)

I'm fully aware of that, play by the rules or run the risk! If you want to try blackhat techniques then you have to deal with the risk of being penalised, if you run a legitimate website and you've been hit by any kind of search update I do feel sorry for you but if you website followed the guidelines then you shouldn't have any problems - I haven't been

Totally agree with Monkey here

And Skinner, I don't tweak my website around Google, or bother listening to the latest fast ranking link building techniques.

All fair points. To be honest, im not talking blackhat or the like here. We all know better now, but back in the day, every "legitimate" SEO company in the world was engaging in link building methods.

good thread, but its going off topic a bit, there's a bit of talk about localised results & google muscling in on that, but has anyone got any speculation they want to share?
what new ranking signals? or algo changes are on the horizon, what about https & links from https sites, what about fake followers, what about pbn's

who's worried about what exactly and who's sitting pretty and not worrying, & why is that ;)

Google are already backtracking on the "SSL as a ranking feature" so I wouldn't worry too much about that one.

If you're building a new project then sure put it on https from day 1.... i wouldn't take the risk of redirecting an old site onto https
