anyone know of a registrar that doesnt make you immediately renew a com for a year when transferring it in?

No, because the renewal is set by the registry, so everyone is subject to it

I think godaddy have a cheap deal at the moment where you keep the remaining time on the domain +1 year.

Almost all registrars ask to renew domains when transfer is performed!
