DMOZ, but where else?

I understand that there are good SEO points to be scored if you can get a site listed in a high PR page on DMOZ...

What are the other directories, paid for or free, that are high on the list of 'essential directories to be included in'.

All thoughts appreciated. Thanks.

I read a year or so ago Best of the Web was worthwhile. How relevant that info is today I'm not sure, but it is high PR. I've done it for one of my sites, but it's not cheap, it's in the hundreds of dollars a listing.

Also, in general, I would say that working out how to leverage press releases is probably going to be more rewarding that directories. I really need to do this myself, and hope to make some progress in the near future. Sure, it's not easy writing good press releases, but I'm sure it will pay dividends.

I'm planning to submit articles to ezine article directories.

Even if you submit each article to 10 or 12 sites, thats a good number of inbound links, and there is always the chance that the article will be reprinted elsewhere. In theory, it seems like a a good idea.

I did a few, it isn't great to be honest.

People hope one of there articles ends up being used on a bunch of sites and create hundreds of links. Just a handful does not do much really .

Don't think any directories are essential any more, particularly in the UK. If you must then DMOZ and Yahoo (and if for the USA then Business.com and BOTW).

Yup, costs a fortune at $299 per year. It gets you multiple links potentially as the directory replicates internationally, but no clicks to speak of in the UK. The directory itself is crap, I have a listing for one of my sites there and I can't even find it!
