Domain trading platform / sedo platform etc

  • Pay an annual subscription of £100 and no commision on any sales

If you could choose how to use sedo or any other domain trading platform, which option would you prefer ?

Actually, Sedo's minimum commission is now $50 (about £30 I think), and the minimum offer is $60 so if you're making a lot of sub £300 sales through them then the commission is way higher than 10%.

In fact the maximum commission that Sedo now charge on a small sale is just over 83% of the sales price, which is an outrage really - ie you accept a $60 (circa £36) offer and Sedo pay you $10 (circa £6) of that.

Yeah, I think $50 is way too much really. Quite a lot of names sell for $60. It makes a mockery of such sales.

Regardless of how the charging structure works, it would be nice to see a large chunk of bunce put into the promotion and advertising of quality generics to those with enough money to buy them. So at the simplest level perhaps just Google Adwords, but at the top level there needs to be top level promotion to ad agencies, branding specialists, FMCG companies and the like.

So when does this new big fish launch??? :shock:

If you set a fixed price and park the domain with them then their commission is only 10% with no minimum, so if you sell a domain for £50, their commission is £5.00...

Yes but it has to be commercially viable to enable this, so the charging structure is a key element in the whole project.

As soon as questions have been answered and the best way forward is worked out ;)

The bottom line is that if domain trading is to be bigger in the UK it needs a bigger awareness, and also a decent platform to trade with.

The trading platform is not a problem. Funding and raising awareness are the 2 major elements to make it a success for everyone.

Raising awareness is easy to do, if money is spent and the site / domains are promoted in the correct ways.

Funding is the main sticking point, as nobody is going to launch a system or spending £1000's on promotion if they are running at a loss
 
For the .uk market, I think Acorn is the best trading platform.

I've always found the best sales are from buyers approaching me directly (via the domain itself or the whois) rather than any "sales venue".

Personally, I wish the .uk whois would publish email contacts as I'm sure I would get more leads.

That is exactly the point though - How many people actually know about SEDO ? (outside of the domain name circles etc) They have no real "awareness"

I suspect the reason the majority of people contact you directly is due to not knowing of any other way.

If tesco / supermarkets / cornershops didn't exist we would all have to go "direct" to buy our food - if you see what I mean ?

If someone likes a domain they will make contact directly. Most of Sedos traffic (initially anyway) was derived and/or built up by folk parking domains with them.

Who is the lead generator, Sedo or the domain? I'm favouring in most cases the domain itself.

I see what your saying, but can you explain what you mean by momentum ? From where I am sitting sedo don't appear to do any main stream promotion of domains or even encourage awareness of "aftermarket" domain names.

As much as I despise Sedo, to be fair to them they do seem to regularly put out press releases promoting the domain name aftermarket (and themselves).

They are still shite though and yes you're right they appear to do seldom little else to promote the quality names that they have within in their stable.
 
Until someone coersces someone like STJ with domains/couk to set up a rival, I think SEDO will probably remain right where it is.

There's a lot wrong with SEDO and some right - I also think there should be a tiered commission structure from say 5-15% depending on sales value or turnover relating to domain sales - with no min. charge bull$**t.

There should also be a single figure payable up front to remove any commission for SEDO for what is an automated process 98% of the time.

The reason i think it will take the above domain - because that's what a lot of new businesses and lay people put in in order to search for domains.

(oh and SEDO own the singular...)

Thats what SEO is all about :) you don't need to own domain.co.uk or domains.co.uk to rank number 1 for the keywords. I think more people would search for domain names or domain name than domains imho
