Domain Transfer Advice

A neighbour has taken on a new job, their company domain is in somebody elses nominet account (.co.uk).

I said to get it moved to the company it's self.

They have asked for transfer and the owner is just trying to change the Tag rather than do it at Nominet.

If they just change the tag, will they have just as much power over the domain as they would with a nominet transfer?

They would need to change the email address to your neighbours which he could setup a nominet account and change the whois details and tag.

If its not in their own nominet account and its not them on the who-is they effectively in my eyes do not own the domain and are leaving them selves open for the other guy to change what he wants, when he wants.

Depends, Some registrars allow you to change the email address of the domain from their panel .

So effectively if the tag was changed to lets say 123-reg ( not recommended but i know they allow email changes of .co.uk , namecheap do not )

Then your guy could then change the email himself in his 123-reg account, thus allowing him to sign up to nominet with that same email address and change all the whois from there.

Absolute pain in the arse. He claims he doesnt have access to nominet and can only do IPS. IPS tag changed but will get them to call nominet and get it properly changed / handed over.

If his registrar allows an email change to the contact details like 123-reg does that will be enough for your guy to then use his email to setup an nominet account and change the Whois .

But yes if that is the case and he can only change the tag it would just mean making sure that the tag its being changed to has the ability to change registrants email address.

Been through this alot of times where clients have come to me to try and get their domains back from "web guys" who have conveniently registered company domains in their own personal name and then gone missing off the face of the earth.

Can't they just call nominet and establish their identity with them and take over the domain that way.

All legal and above board.

Generally that would only be the case if the whois details is in the correct persons name for a quick resolution, if the domain is under a business name or someone elses then you have to jump through hoops and send all kinds of proof that your the rightful owner which can take time.

Seems much easier to change an email/tag if you can and then pay the £12 nom fee's to change the whois .

At least thats the experiences ive had, im sure there is much more experienced people here than me with dealing with Nominet
