I am in the middle of buying a .co.uk domain name using an Escrow service, and the seller has just informed me that they wont change the IPS TAG as easyspace.com want £49 to do so. Instead they want me to create an account at Easyspace (so I then have to pay the £49 to release it to my TAG).

How do I stand on this? Surely if you buy a name the onus is on the seller to give you ownership and control of the name.

Yes - the registrant can also contact Nominet direct to change the TAG and it costs about £20 I think.

I would say that full control and ownership ought to be handed over on a purchase.

It could be good to find middle ground, either split the £50 or request they do it manually...

It does depend on the value of the domain, as £35 transfer, £50 release etc could kill most lower sales as its just not worth the hassle.

Cheers,
Rob

Easyspace Transfer issues

Thanks Rob, I had thought of going the Nominet direct route as a last resort.

I have asked the Escrow manager for advice on their policy. This is something to watch out for though as it's a "hidden cost" you might not think of during negotiations.

I am so peeved by this I am going to set up a site listing how to TRANSFER AWAY from these companies. It took me 10 minutes to find anything on the Easyspace site about how to move away from them, I guess they all want to make it difficult to move away from using their service. Their answer is to change Name Servers (as they then keep the renewal business).

I know this came up recently on moving away from uk2.net too so I think a site with easy links to AWAY pages with these companies could save us all some time.

If anyone has some other host companies with similar transfer issues, please send me the details.

Slightly o/t, but which Escrow service are you using and could you provide some feedback on them once the transaction is completed? Ta.

Once this is done (next week I hope) I will write an article on the whole experience.

Admin: Point of law, if that issue was not raised or suggestion that you bear all costs, and the money has been, they would have to swallow the cost.

Where you push that issue would depend on cost analysis, if not, sue them for breach of promise and contract.

Thanks olebean, I'll use your wording and see if they cough up.

Update

Message from Escrow Manager:

In response to the question about the fee for the registrar transfer, we usually recommend that the buyer accept a transfer at the registrar that the name is currently held at. Of course, the buyer has the option to request it be transferred to another registrar. But if there are costs incurred, the buyer would be responsible for these costs

I have asked for a copy of thier terms and conditions of purchase.
