What are people's views on domain names with hyphens?

To me, they look unprofessional (though I guess a good website and brand could counter that).

I am always surprised that people register 'hyphen' names, or even pay larger sums of money for them.

I track all .uk suspended and dropping names, but I filter out hyphenated domains, because they're just not me.

Maybe names are worth what people are prepared to pay for them, though I'm not sure that's always the case.

I think the same as you.
As a business if someone calls up and you want to direct them to your website adding ‘dash’ or ‘hyphen’ can confuse people and it doesn’t just flow.
Like everything else if someone is willing to pay a certain amount for something then there is a market.

I have seen businesses with 2 or 3 hyphens on their website and it looks hellish.
Each to their own but I see it as the bargain basement version.

Unless of course it has decent backlinks and a history in a particular niche.

Why do businesses in Germany and neighboring Germanic countries prefer to use hyphens in domain names, while it's no-no in the English speaking world?

If its for a brand then surely its about the memory factor. You have to explain its keyword, hyphen keyword dot co dot uk. Radio test is king if your serious about branding I would have thought. ( not that imm even vaguely an expert) .. i.e. you need to be able say over radio and have someone instantly be able to type it in.

If your purely online and seo then probably more getawayable. I find myself only going for single words more and more unless its a serious search term.

I think I've been living out getawayable most of my life. Chancers forever.
