Free.co.uk SOLD $205,000 by DomainBooth.com

Nice sale. Not overpriced. That has "TV ad potential" written all over it.

Virtually no end-users are investing in .UK domains. I mean, why would they? The only people picking them up are pretty much resellers hoping they can resell them to the .co.uk owners.

This appears to be an end-user purchase based on the price, so would likely have no use or need for the .UK extension.

That's my guess, but it would be interesting to get a first hand account from someone who has just spent $205,000 on a domain. I'm wondering if the seller jacked up the .uk price so the buyer decided against, however if the buyer literally turned their nose up at it even just as part of the deal, that's pretty brutal for .uk.

A .co.uk that sells for 200k in dollars doesnt mean the .uk is worthless just cos buyer didnt want it.

If anything it means youd be lucky to get the .uk for anything less than 6 figure sum from the buyer.

If no anyone who got a .co.uk worth coupla hundred grand and you are utterly convinced the .uk is worthless pls pm me immediately as ive got a tenner burning a hole in my pocket for that worthless .uk.

Excellent sale, Previous tag holder was: Anthony Appleby [Tag = DESIGNCONSULT]

Wasn't suggesting it was worthless, of course. However, in one of the biggest .co.uk acquisitions for years (and possibly for the foreseeable), the buyer either chose the .co.uk over the .uk (if they were priced similar) or didn't want the .uk (if it was offered as part of the price). We all sit around waiting for magical signs of which extension is going to come out on top, these are the only kind of signs we're going to get. I'm just attempting to get a better insight in to what happened here.

When you take the following opinion into account and find out that shopping.uk sold for £45k, you realise the first opinion counts for very little:

https://seemly.co.uk/domains/prices?ext=.uk&rows=10&price=desc

Several of those now lead to dan.com pages which suggests speculative purchases by domainers.

shopping was bought by Doug who is a member here

campings is definitely an anomaly and I bet the seller is still pinching himself.

Has anyone considered that the seller may not have even offered the .uk and the buyer didn't think to ask?

I can confirm 100% the seller 'Anthony' did offer James the .uk - Anthony is a solid, genuine domain pro and would never not have disclosed it. Hope that helps.

I honestly believe its going to takes years (5, maybe even 10) before .UK is considered a first choice for end users because the general public is just too familiar with .co.uk, i happened to speak to someone this week outside of domaining who had bought a .UK from someone like godaddy.. so i asked what made him buy the .uk... his response was... "The .co.uk was taken and the .UK was cheaper than any of the others" so maybe this will be a slow process and the general public will start to walk towards the .UK based on most .co.uk's being taken, however, i expect that to take a considerable amount of time.

Furthermore, from an investment stand point its the perfect "Buyers" market at the moment due to no competition and very little spending so outside of being willing to sit on a .uk domain for the foreseeable future and strictly for investment purposes then i see no .UK sales making the headlines anytime soon unless you get the odd "Big Brand" buying one for future use but given the current financial situation world wide i think that is a long shot too.
