Hi All,

Not sure if this is the right section...

I have just agreed to buy a .com for a reasonable sum from a UK based person and I don't think I need to use Escrow as the seller seems sound.

I have never bought a .com from anyone before and I am not sure he has sold one either.

What's the process for changing registrant for him and for me in easy steps?

Many thanks indeed,

Luke

1. He requests an authorisation code

2. He gives it to you

3. You transfer to your .com registrar using the authorisation code.

Or if you use the same registrar. He simply pushes it to you. You change Whois and lock it.

I always register with their registrar and have them push it to me, then I transfer after, its easier and safer in .com world.

Hi Chaps,

I have found a nice summary at www.domaindale.com - copied below in case anyone needs it later.

They recommend getting an account at the same registrar, so I have done exactly that and bought a .com I have little need of! I hope the registrar is okay - I called their phone and it said 'number not in use' - we'll see.

Cheers

Luke

Step1

Usually domains are paid for one or more years in advance (term period). Since owner (seller) is selling the domain to someone else, then the buyer will take over the domain in the middle of the term period. Any remaining time on the domain will not be charged to the buyer. When the domain name comes up for renewal, the buyer must purchase another 1-year term prior to the expiration date.

Step2

If owner's domain name is registered with coolcom (owner's service provider or registrar), for example, then the buyer will need to setup an account with coolcom. It is best to transfer a domain name between account holders within the same registrar (coolcom in this example). Afterward, the buyer can transfer it to another registrar of his/her choice later, if desired.

Step3

Owner (seller) must first disable domain lock or domain protection (not required for .ca extension) or else the domain cannot be transferred. Owner (seller) must also disable domain privacy or else you will not receive the email with the authorization link. Finally, owner MUST make sure his/her email address on file is accurate and current or else the owner will not receive the email with the authorization link.

Step4

a) To transfer the domain name to a buyer, the buyer must initiate the Transfer Request through the account that is already opened by his/her request to the same service provider (registrar) as the owner's (seller's) registrar.

b) The transfer request MUST be initiated by the buyer not the current owner (assuming payment process is complete).

c) Here are the buyer instructions: Login to your account. Click on the "Transfer A Domain" link (each registrar has different format and web page design, it might be needed to ask the registrar for the instructions). Enter the domain name that you wish to acquire. It will let you know that it is available to transfer. Select the option that says you are the person requesting the domain to be transferred to your account and submit the order. There is usually no charge to transfer between accounts.

Step5

The registrar (same for both parties, now) will send an e-mail notification to the current owner (seller). It will ask for owner (seller) approval or authorization to transfer the domain name to the buyer. Owner have usually 14 days to respond otherwise the request will expire and the owner (seller) will retain the ownership of the domain name.

Step6

Once the transfer is approved (by seller), the domain name will change ownership. The domain name will be removed from seller's account and will be added to the buyer's account. Then the seller is no longer the domain owner. From that moment on, the buyer is the official account holder and owns the full rights to the domain name.

That's all folks!

Where did you register it?

Hi Caz & Skinner & anyone else that knows...

The domain I am buying is currently registered with a registrar/service provider, say XYZnames/co/uk, who is hooked up with Tucows as the domain name wholesaler.

I regged a random .com with XYZ yesterday and have still received no reply. That domain is still available right now! (Some registrars are hopeless.)

Do I have to register with XYZnames/co/uk or can I register with another registrar/service provider, say ABCnames/co/uk, who is also hooked up with Tucows?

That is, is it best to use the very same registrar/service provider or is it simply okay to use any registrar provided they are also hooked up with Tucows?

Thanks,

Luke

Good idea mate, .coms' are a pain in the ass especially if your trying to sell to an end user who doesn't know about domains

You don't need to register with the same registrar, only do that if youd want a very quick painless push.

Thanks for the replies. The seller will kick off the process on Tuesday. Hopefully all will be okay.

Update on this...

I'm buying a .com and it's a transfer from Tucows to eNom.

The seller has done everything fine - even by putting me as the admin contact on the whois. This meant that I clicked the relevant links on behalf of the seller... so I know it's been done okay and quickly.

The seller's "last chance to change your mind" 5 day period expired at 4.30am UK (BST) time but the domain hasn't transferred across to me yet.

How long can it take from this point and when do I need to nudge the registrars?

Many thanks, Luke

The seller should have the option of forcing the transfer, ask 'em to do that.

Make sure that they have unlocked it.

Hi,

I think the seller has done all they can - the domain is unlocked, I have been put in as the admin contact email, and the last email the seller received was this:

Re: Transfer of xxxxxx.com

Tucows received notification on Wed Apr 7 04:23:52 2010 that you have requested a transfer to another domain name registrar.

If you want to proceed with this transfer, you do not need to respond to this message.

If you wish to cancel the transfer, please contact us before Mon Apr 12 04:23:52 2010 by going to our website,

https://rr-n1-tor.opensrs.net/transfers/index.cgi?xxxxxx to confirm.

If we do not hear from you by Mon Apr 12 04:23:52 2010, the transfer will proceed.

So it looks as if the seller has done all they can, the 5 day 'change your mind' period expired this morning.

All I am waiting for is the two registrars to transfer the domain and put it into my name.

I just wondered whether the transfer should be instant at the expiration of the 5 day period or whether I have to wait 24 or 48hrs or more.

Cheers, Luke

That all looks normal, the transfer should go ahead automatically now, I wonder if it's just taking a bit of time to show in your account ?

Cheers Andy,

I'm pleased it all looks normal. When it's finally in the bag, I'll post the domain name up on acorn for a bit of a discussion - that's assuming that anyone might be interested ;)

All the best, Luke

Hi All,

More hand-holding needed!

The domain I am buying has been transferred from Tucows to eNom, but the updated whois says the registrant is the name of the registering company I used. This is like 123-reg.co.uk appearing as the registrant.

I guess/hope that it will be transferred across to my name within the next 24 hours.

Is this the correct way of doing things? Should my name have appeared straight away in the updated whois rather than the company I buy my .coms through?

Thanks again, Luke

I'm pretty sure it will change to your name soon, probably because it's just landing in 123s system, give it some time and if no different contact them and request an update.

Hi Andy,

I was just a bit surprised that their name was there as the registrant rather than mine. I reckon you're right and that once they get to work today, they'll change the registrant to me. I can't wait - it's a cracking domain at what I think was a cheapish price. Once it's all done and dusted, I'll spill the beans :)

Many thanks for your help,

Luke

Hi Philip,

I think I have missed that opportunity.

The seller and I have gone for the "arm's length" transfer between different registrars - the one that you, Skinner and many others try to avoid. I can see why now!

The domain has been transferred away from the original registrar to the new registrar. At a high level, this has been from Tucows to eNom. At the next level down, this has been from the seller's registrar/ISP to my registrar/ISP. (I'll keep them nameless at the moment just in case it goes pear-shaped.)

The registrant on the updated whois is my registrar/ISP rather than me. As Andy suggests, this should change to me in the next 24 hours, hopefully

Cheers, Luke

All done.

The registrar's name appeared in the whois for a couple of days after the successful transfer. In the end, I just logged in and changed it to mine - I didn't know I had to do this!

Thanks for the help all.

Regards, Luke
