How does the reg date influence domain value?

I was just wondering if the reg date influenced the domain value. If a good name has a date of say 1997, or you catch a domain with an initial date of 1997 is there a difference. Surely the value is in the domain and not the date, but I was wondering if you could charge a premium for older domains or if there is perceived value in older domains.

I don't think it makes that much of a difference from the medium term onwards. A lot of the better 1998-2000 dated regs that still exist were regged & dropped before those registrations took place, it's an endless cycle.

People prefer aged domains as they feel it gives an SEO benefit, and is often viewed as a "badge of honour", but it's not something that would change my own valuation of a domain's worth by very much. Newly regged names sometimes take a while to catch in SERPs, but then so do aged domains.

A crappy domain is a crappy domain now matter how long someone has been daft enough to renew it.

Maybe class it as a "nice to have" if you have a long continuous registration on a domain you like?

A newly reg domain is seem to be unwanted that's why no one reg.

Most end buyers does not understand that a good domain could be dropped and caught again.

A old domain does not mean that it's a quality domain, but buyers will sometime think it is of value that's why you had been holding on to it for so many years.

@ Alex, the thing with say a 1997 domain dropping is that it might have hundreds or thousands of backlinks driving traffic to them instantly, so as soon as you catch it and put a site on it selling the same products that it was selling before it dropped, you are on to a winner from all the pre-existing traffic to that domain, that in itself would add some value to a name.

Buying names that used to be sites is often a wise move...

It makes sense about the perceptions of end users and the backlinks, but I guess if the back links remain active and you intend to use the domain yourself there probably isn't really much difference between catches and old registrations. Thanks for your comments.
