How to gain Domain names.......

Hi all,

Im new the Domain scene but feel im learning quickly.

Ok so i understand you can gain Domain names 3 key ways, please correct me if im wrong and add comments accordingly.

1. Search site such as godaddy, if free, buy it.
(simpleest way but very very hard to find a good name with a good premium extention)

2. buy a domain buy auction or through a private sale.
(expensive but deals to be found)

3. Tracking domain names that are in the 4 month cooling of period after an owner has allowed it to laps and not paid, attempt to register the domain on the first day after the four months is over.

Am i on track here? have i missed anything?

if its a popular domain name, unless you are chuck norris you probably will need a drop catcher to catch it for you.

UK domains generally drop 92 days after they have expired (three months). If by attempt to register it you mean visit GoDaddy on the day of release, you will find that it will have almost certainly already been snapped up by a dropcatcher the second it 'dropped'

You can book with some of the public catchers when a domain name goes into suspended status one month after expiry, although if it is a competitive name there's only a very small chance of getting it.

If you have the technical ability, time, money and resources you could of course become a Nominet member and try dropcatching yourself.

ok, on godaddy, there is the option to 'backorder' is this a drop catcher?

Am I correct in saying these are the only 3 ways then?

Not sure about GoDaddy as I never use them, never seen their tag on any UK domains which have dropped that I had my eye on.

Also, just below the header logo on this forum you will see it tells you the expiry date of domains which are dropping today to make it simple for you

When checking availability of names, I search at internic.com for US extensions, and nominet.org.uk for UK extensions, i.e the availability checkers provided by the registries.

Although it's rare, there have been cases where the domain checkers at domain registration companies have been watched, i.e. if you checked the domain there, found it available but then left it half an hour, the company might have registered it. Better to be safe than sorry.

A good way to register good domains is to have an eye for new trends and reg them before anyone else thinks of them.

You could always approach existing registrants to see if they'll sell you the domain at a bargain price - not all holders realise the value of the names they're sitting on.

GoDaddy don't catch .co.uk, and unless he domain is on their tag or a non-syndicated registrar they won't catch it.

It's highly unlikely that you will catch a quality name unless you do it yourself which costs £xxxx to set up plus you would need to write your own scripts for accessing Nominets servers.

Just have a search for the few .coms and .co.uks that are left over or book a catch on something less demanding.

I have tended to go with option 2, buying privately, not necessarily expensive, you could spend over £1000 on chasing dropped domains if you get your own TAG and get nothing to speak of or you could send some emails and letters and get domains like Custom.co.uk, LivingroomFurniture.co.uk or TVs.co.uk for £1000 which should offer good value for leasing, developing or flipping.

I would agree with Scott. It is still possible to pick up nice available domains (maybe worth £500 to £1000 to an end user) but I don't think you'll find them every day or get a living from it from day one.

There also seems to be more and more dropcatchers chasing fewer and fewer prime domains which involves a lot of wasted time and expense so a lot of the members here are either trading or developing really decent domains which means studying the market i.e. reading dnjournal.com (and archives) reading thro' this forum and the reported domain sales link at the top of page and getting a feel for a really good domain.

It's possible to pick up a really good domain for £1000 which would sell to an end user for £5k or £10k but you have to be prepared to wait for a while for an end user to come along. Alternatively a lot of domainers have gone on to develop domains, enhancing the value of the domain and making serious money from affiliate deals.

There are still a few domains out there that are undeveloped, and worth £50,000 to resellers, like many on here, and £250k to the right end user.

It just takes cash, and the guts to go for it!

Isn't Barry "The Hitman" an example of this, when he secured gold.co.uk last month for circa £50k, I don't remember the number but was around 40-50k .

IF he stops hiding on grassy gnolls and basking in the sun (bed shop) , he stands to make a SERIOUS killing with that.

Yes, I agree with this 110%. In the right cases, even something that costs £xx,xxx can be "cheap" if put into perspective compared to its likely value down the road.

I do that every day, it's like a bad habit. See/hear/think up some words, throw them into domain name analyzer, check against the .couk & .orguk. If you find a beauty, grab it, if you find a 'maybe', add to reserve list.

The problem with a reserve list though, is that when you check the list a few weeks later, and find someone else has regged a handful, you then end up regretting not taking them yourself!
