Is a mention similar to a link

Was just thinking that it would make sense for Google to treat the reference of a website in an article the same as if the article provided a link to the website?

I'm sure they don't but it would make sense that a web address that gets a lot of mentions without a proper link should gain some authority?

Or maybe it does help??

Only reason I'm wondering is I've been trying some press releases and it's easy to get our website a mention but harder people to put it as a link. But the meaning is the same if Google read the domain name as a web address.

they are known as citations, they are great for local seo and listings , not as strong for standard SEO however I believe they are counted and many others do, just not as weighted.

Do you mean someone saying acorndomains.co.uk rather than doing the full link thingy like acorndomains.co.uk?

A non-hyperlinked mention of a URL will be highly unlikely to carry the same weight as a hyperlinked one, however if a "mention" was to appear enough you'd like to think Google would use it as a trust signal that the URL is being talked about alot on related sites.

Nothing wrong with having mentions from a user benefit point of view with more people seeing your brand in front of them and a search engine "potential" benefit for trust gain. Keep a well rounded, diverse backlink profile and hope for the best......its not black and white "do this and this will happen". Smaller single factors alone may play little to no value but combining factors effectively could be a game changer.
