I have a laptop under 2 months old. Everything is saved to an external harddrive so machine is pretty much as it came.

Every 5 seconds or so, it freezes, the eggtimer comes up and i cant do anything. If i'm typing, it will miss sections of the sentence when it freezes.

Any ideas what can be causing this??

Have a look in Task Manager (press CTRL + ALT + DEL, then Start Task Manager) and see whats running under processes.

Sort the process list by CPU (by clicking the column header) and then watch a while to see what jumps to the top of the process queue. Do the same for Memory.

Downlaod and scan the machine for malware using "Search & Destroy" and "Malwarebytes". Google for them they are free.

Also check your Windows Events logs in Control Panel for anything in Red or frequent entries.

Does anything show up?

Check drivers for things like graphics card to see if you can update
Try disabling items on startup like virus programs to see if they are clashing/causing issues

task manager shows lots of things moving up and down even when not touching the machine.
The main culprit which i dont recognise is dwm.exe - jumps between 00 and 02 every couple of seconds. everything else is task manager , sidebar, i explore etc.

@ Pendragon, dwm.exe is supposed to be there, but you can switch it off if it's hogging resources, nothing to worry about with that one:

http://www.neuber.com/taskmanager/process/dwm.exe.html

dwm.exe - Google Search

dwm.exe is a Desktop Window Manager from Microsoft Corporation belonging to Microsoft® Windows® Operating System. dwm.exe is the Desktop Window Manager and is responsible for the graphical effects in Microsoft Windows Vista operating system such as 3D effects, live windows previews and windows transperancies. The Aero interface in Windows Vista can be quite taxing on system performace on certain computers and you can switch it off or reduce the screen resolution to increase performance.

Is this a standalone laptop? Simply part of a workgroup?

Rich

thought i'd solved it but still happening!

What's hogging the CPU when you look at Task Manager? Are there any processes displaying large percentages, like double figures?
