Here's the email I got back when I enquired a few months ago, just in case anyone is interested in bidding....
*****************************
The domain name leicester.co.uk is now for sale.
I am writing to you because, either
- you have previously expressed an interest in buying this domain, or
- your organisation is considered to have a possible interest in buying the domain.
I have owned the domain since 1994. I created a very popular community web site in the early days of the World Wide Web. Too early in fact. No-one then thought it worth paying for advertising on the Web. Estate agents ridiculed my suggestion that they might be able to sell houses over the Internet! So I did other things and moved on.
The address info @ leicester.co.uk attracted many emails intended for other organisation such as Alliance & Leicester, Leicester City Council, University of Leicester, De Montfort University.
Eventually I was spending too much time maintaining the site for too little (=no) recompense except some favourable comments from regular visitors to the site. I moved on and now use the domain only as a personal website.
I now propose to offer the domain leicester.co.uk for sale.
Value
With a population of 280,000, Leicester is the largest city in the East Midlands and the tenth largest in the country. The domain name has to have value in 5 figures to reflect the importance of the city and the potential earnings that a web site based on the domain could achieve.
Prestige email accounts (such as mike @ leicester.co.uk) based on the domain could bring in a steady income.
The domain name will be transferred to the highest bidder, subject to a reserve of £20,000 and a deadline of 28th February 2007. Please email your offer to mike @ leicester.co.uk.
Best Wishes,
Mike Spathaky
