    Hello,
I was hoping someone might have the answer to this since my memory isn't what it used to be - please!

I'm sure that I read a few years back about a (or a handful of) major retailers, e.g. like Debenhams or whoever, who held hundreds or thousands of keyword rich domains that they had 301'd to the pages on their website.

Does anyone know of any that still do this, and any examples of the types of domains they use?

Trying to explain it to someone and he doesn't get it, thought a practical demonstration might work better.

    Thanks!

I think it were money supermarket, names like savings.co.uk and mortgages.co.uk, but I can't think of a high street company doing it.

    house.co.uk re-directs visitors to britishgas.co.uk.

It's interesting how some big players have decent domains like British Gas do with gas, house etc, yet you rarely hear of the deals being done and how much for. I can't imagine these companies were any quicker to register than back in ~1996 than anyone else; unless they were held back by Nominet through prior assignment or auction?

Aren't these bad examples to quote?...

    no longer resolve

just proves that British Gas gave up on the generic name & returned to their brand name.

Slightly off-topic, this LLL.co.uk redirect is pretty good - poo.co.uk

They don't like to publicise them and the sellers unlikely care to either. As an example, Seb Clark isn't exactly jumping back on here to provide details of his account of the recent purple.co.uk transaction. It may only have become public because neither buyer or seller requested the Sedo broker keep it confidential. The late 1990s were a long, long time ago in respect of .co.uk transactions and things occured quite differently. There were no forums for a start.

    Another 100 here too...
    http://memorabledomains.co.uk/more-companies-that-get-it.html

(I've not checked the list for a couple of years though so it's bound to be out of date. But at least it's a starting point...)

And if you want more general (i.e. not particularly UK-specific) material about companies making good use of generics, here's a list I compiled of people commenting on how their generic domain benefitted their business...
