How set on "monkey" were you? Was it your first choice of animal?

We weren't particularly set on any to be honest, it was all going to come down to price compared to quality then make a decision based on that. I've changed laptop since so I've lost all my notes on the negotiations but a couple of others I liked the look of were asking way too much money.

The one a caterpillar turns into (dont want to name it and have it indexed and cause the owner problems) said he wanted £50k, which was too rich for me.

Actually heres some notes from Sedo - they were all just low offers to see what the min bid was set at (if any)

alligator.co.uk - £300 offered - seller wants £9995
chimpanzee.co.uk - min offer £500 - £500 offered, seller asking for £5000
hyena.co.uk - £300 offered, seller asking for £4995
leopard.co.uk - £300 offered - seller asking for £20k (maybe holding out for Apple, same name as their OS?)
wasp.co.uk - £300 offered - seller wanted £7995
raven.co.uk - £300 offered, seller asking for £4500
gopher.co.uk - £1500 fixed price

Monkey was £14k, I think.

I felt alligator had spelling issues, whereas Monkey didn't.

Alligator wouldn't be very good for loans site though would it? sounds a bit too aggressive and sharp

Nice buy Murray, I'm sure you will make a nice profit on it. No way you should name the price, as I'm sure Invincible wouldn't of named the price or details of a business deal when he was "relatively" new with his business ventures. I can't see why this isnt worthy of news, Murray was a complete newcomer approx18 months ago, who has been an active member on the forum, he has had some success and this is his first big domain investment.

Its certainly in the top 1% of domains posted on Acorn.

So, judging by some of the prices bandied around, it's not too difficult to pick up a domain in the top 1% on Acorn for £5K to £10k. Which would explain the prices achieved on Domainlore for the more "normal" domains recently..

What would you develop it as? It could be used as pretty much anything. The problem is if you make an arse of developing it / promoting it, you destroy the value in it. Nobody is going to want to buy it if its got a load of 'debt management' anchor links and penalised

He can either develop it, or sell it, I would not attempt both. As the maximum profit in selling it is around £10K, which assumes the extremes of him buying it for £1 and selling it for £10,000, and that can only be done once. It shouldn't be too hard to use such a great domain to make £10k per year, should it?

If it were that easy, everyone would be doing it. Feel free to post a couple of ideas from Murray to choose from. I have some spare domains/money, I might pick one of them also and give it a go

In all seriousness, its one thing to come up with an idea for a site - personally I'd put a payday loans one on it. But if it gets whacked before you make any real money, then you've made nothing and cost yourself the domain in the process. Selling it on to another end user is the 'safe' route. You're guaranteed £x with no risk at all.

A great domain name with a great business plan with the right expertise, funding etc yes excellent

But I don't currently have any kind of plan let alone anything else.

Ideas are easy, it's all in the execution as I am sure you know. Personally, I wouldn't touch payday loans as the industry stinks (IMHO). I had enough of a moral problem making money from gadget insurance - just sold my last trading website selling this, as profits had dwindled substantially. For the first time in 11 years I do not have a website producing a revenue stream!
