Hi All,

I recently bought a co.uk domain from someone and they activated the transfer via nominet, I went through the process and paid the £12 transfer fee. The problem is the domain is still registered under the original owner, as nominet said it could take 5 days to transfer for some reason.

I have now emailed nominet, and they have replied saying it is an issue for 1&1 to sort out as they didnt accept the tag.

Does this sound right? As the domain is not in my name yet, I wouldnt have thought 1&1 would help.

It will be to do with the handshake some firms don't accept unless a transfer is in process via there control panel

What do you think I should do then. Should I try to register the domain via 1&1 and say I am the owner, and then contact their support?

Yes log in 1&1 instigate a transfer in it may resolve itself in 24 hours if not you will have to contact them.

thanks, I initiated a transfer of the domain via 1and1. They have emailed me now to let me know I must get the former owner to change the TAG to the 1and1 TAG.

I'm not sure why this happened. When I have transferred a domain before via nominet, it usually goes through straight away.

Has anyone else had this problem recently?

1&1 turned on the handshake option recently and have made a complete mess of things, numerous customers of mine have had a nightmare trying to complete transfers to them and I now tell buyers not to transfer to 1&1.

It will be interesting to see if your latest attempt actually goes through!

I have a client who uses LCN and if you start the Nominet transfer before he has added it to his control panel it fails due the handshake setting at LCN, however if he adds itn to his account at LCN BEFORE starting the nominet transfer it all works automatically within about 20 mins.

Sounds like it could be a similar set up at 1 and 1 but have not had any dealings with 1 and 1 for many years.

If seller is agreable (A tag holder on here?) You could also try doing the transfer but keeping on the sellers TAG (so it is then registered in your name) and then get the seller to do a tag change to 1 and 1. they can then see that you are the owner

Yep, had the exact same problem recently and 1 & 1 were completely useless at assisting, trying to blame it on the registrar it was coming from (who had confirmed it was not being accepted by 1 & 1 due to the handshake). 1 & 1 kept saying it hadn't been initiated which was BS, why they didn't mention the handshake set up i don't know. Tried transferring 3 times in total, even after notifying 1 & 1 it was due to be transferred to them, it still never processed. Useless.

I eventually had to advise the buyer to move the domain elsewhere, in future i will refuse any 1 & 1 transactions.

Same here. Activated the transfer and the buyer tried to move it to 1&1. Utter fiasco. Told them blank that 1&1 were suspect and wouldn't recommend them in a month of Sundays.

Only recommend daily & heartinternet thesedays.

The first buyer of mine it happened to got some instructions sent to them from 1&1 which said that the seller (me) needed to print off/complete/sign a form and post it to the current registrar asking them to change to TAG to schlund!!! :) :)

Clueless, it's beyond me why any domainer uses them!

I have transferred lots of domains to 1and1 in the past and never had a problem until this domain. If this happens again, I will look into moving all my domains elsewhere.

Shouldn't the registrant data update regardless? (Unless i missread first post!?)
