Nominet is now seeking nominations for a member-elected non-executive director. The successful candidate would serve a three-year term.

Members of Nominet may propose individuals to stand for election. The person standing does not need to be a member of Nominet, but only members can propose, second and vote.

Nominations will be accepted until noon on the 5th June 2020 (BST).

More information, including a candidate pack detailing how to apply or propose a candidate, is available here.

I wouldn't wish anyone I know and like to be tarnished with the Nominet brush these days.

You are generous in your comments, Des, but firstly I am deeply committed to a challenging clinical role in the NHS for as long as this health crisis lasts. The good administration of the UK's name space matters to me, but in the coming year I just wouldn't have the time to commit to doing it properly. My job is high pressure and when I switch off, I need to switch off and crash.

Secondly, I think I am quite marginal, and I assume these elections are quite hard for outsiders to win?

But thank you for even thinking of me.

Ideally you need a person with some technical knowledge and experience of dealing with boardroom level meetings, an experienced domainer at least 20 years, who understands where things have gone since the beginning and where Nominet thinks they are going.. someone who's not in it for their ego and not affiliated with big registrars.

Even if I was able to (and not saying that I am the best available person anyway, and I've explained why I can't) what chance does an industry outsider have against company 'choices' when the voting system is weighted so heavily in favour of major registrars? They get so many extra votes for the volume of domains on their tags that I don't see how they would be outvoted. What's the experience and precedent in previous elections? Surely it's in the best interests of the powerful big registrars to mass-vote for 'one of their own' or someone who will help maintain the 'working relationship' those registrars have with Nominet?

You would have to go the route of Anne and campaign all members for their votes. Do so on a ticket of understanding the end user and having a good grasp of the change that is required to bring Nominet into the 21st century - trust, development of .uk, accountability; and you would stand a chance - I have no doubt.

Your reasons for not wishing to do so are entirely credible. Of course, that would only become an issue if you won. You could arguably delay any decision until you had a decision to make.

Thanks Murray. I imagine no-one usually knows whether a candidate has backing of big registrars, or is a preferred candidate of the Board. With regard to the influence of the big registrars, through their weighted voting rights, based on number of domains held, it would be good if Nominet would clarify precisely which domains are used for the calculation?

1. Is it only names where the member is themselves the registrant of the domain?

2. Is it all names administered through the member's tags, regardless of who the registrant is? (Probably, yes)

3. And are only domains up to renewal date used for the calculation, or are all names that have not expired and been dropped still eligible for the calculation of the voting rights?

I ask this final question because 100,000s of .uk domains registered by companies such as Fasthosts in June 2019 require renewal in early June 2020, but would not 'drop' (and would remain under the control of the Tag holder) until September 2020.
