Hi Mat,
In my opinion you can never beat conventual accountants, however, if you're a startup wishing to keep costs down, plus also want to receive a great suite of tools and apps to make your accounting hassle free... then hands down i would recommend Crunch 100%.

For the past 15yrs I've used conventual accountants and continue to do so with my more established businesses, yet with startups I've got involved with I tend to recommend Crunch as their technology and costs are fantastic.
For anyone familiar with using Xero Accountancy Software for snapping pics of receipts and uploading various data on the fly, storing data in the cloud and so on.... Crunch has the same functionality and then some but for a fraction of the cost.
If you was after one of the best independent firm of Chartered Accountants and Chartered Tax Advisers, then drop me a PM and i will forward you the details to one of the partners I've been working with for over 15yrs who also deals with the likes of Trivago etc.

We've recently launched cloudaccountant.co.uk and it's proving popular. You can still meet your accountant if you so wish but there really is no need so you're better saving time and money.
Xero and Freeagent cloud accounting software packages are amazing.
What cloud accounting means is you can access your accounts anytime, anywhere, on any device. This means when at a client you can issue an invoice, take a payment and this is all immediately reflected in your accounts. This in return means you don't spend your free time issuing invoices or chasing payment.
If you get an expense receipt scan and upload it and then throw it away. Job done.
The software downloads your daily bank statements and matches to your records.
Your dashboard shows real time key data to help manage your business. You know how much cash you have, who and what needs paying and critically ensures you have enough put aside for tax. It also highlights key deadlines.
There are no software updates for you to perform and your data is safeguarded and backed up for you.
Because you do most the work your accountancy fees are a lot less. We are there to offer support and help with vat refurbs, tax returns and year end accounts etc.

There are quite a few online accounts that post at ukbusinessforums.co.uk. I don't use them, but some of them seem quite helpful.
